Manchester United are yet to agree a fee with Juventus for midfielder Arturo Vidal – leaving a possible switch in the balance.
New United boss Louis Van Gaal instructed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to sign the Chile World Cup ace.
Juventus want at least £35m for Vidal, while United value him closer to £25m.
If Van Gaal is unable to clinch a deal for Vidal, he will turn his attentions to Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman.
The Dutchman is currently recovering from a knee injury suffered in March, but is making good progress in his rehabilitation.
Van Gaal is thought to be keen on bringing £25m-rated Strootman to Old Trafford and will wait until January to splash the cash.
Everton starlet John Stones is attracting interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.
Stones was an outstanding performer for the Toffees last season and was rewarded with a call-up to England’s preliminary World Cup squad.
He was not selected in Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad, but, despite this, Everton look set to face a battle to keep him at Goodison Park this summer.
Everton are considering a £14m move for Sevilla hot-shot Carlos Bacca.
Manager Roberto Martinez will move for Bacca if he fails in his pursuit to re-sign Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku.
