Asked whether a buy-back option in the contract existed, Wenger replied:
“Yes.” Asked specifically whether he had decided not to take up that option
he also simply said: “Yes.”
Wenger then added: “We bought Mesut Özil for £40 million the year before in
the same position. Look, Fabregas was here at Arsenal. Once and for all, he
decided to leave. When a player with those characteristics decides to leave
the club, you have to buy somebody else. And that is what we did.
“Why should we buy again somebody else who has already been replaced by
somebody else? That means he’s somebody else twice.”
Fabregas has made clear that returning to Arsenal was not an option open to
him when he decided to leave Barcelona, after a largely frustrating spell at
the Nou Camp.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said it had taken him very little time to
convince the 27-year-old to join his club, despite his background in north
“I spoke with him and after 10 minutes he told me he wanted to join us,”
Mourinho said. “What happened before that with Arsenal I don’t know.”
