”You see some teams invest, some teams don’t.

“We’ll have to take a big look at things ourselves to see how hard we’ve been hit. I know the club has announced a few numbers before.

”It’s not for me to say here now we are going to have X amount because I don’t really know.

“I don’t really know how hard we have been hit. We are a financially strong club, but we are also probably being hit more than anybody else.

”Let’s see how quickly we can get our fans back into the stadium and of course the league position is going to be important for us this season. If we can get a trophy, the FA Cup or the Europa League.

”The Europa League will also qualify us for the Champions League, there’s still a lot of uncertainty and these three or four months, every businessman in the world, every footballer in the world, I think everyone is still unsure what the effect will be.”

Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana is keen to join Chelsea this summer, according to reports.

Frank Lampard is reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper due to the inconsistent performances of Kepa Arrizabalaga this season.

Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, who has impressed on loan at Sheffield United this term, is reportedly on Chelsea’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

But according to The Athletic, Chelsea have been in regular contact with Onana’s representatives in recent months ahead of a potential move for the Cameroon international.

The report also claims that Onana is ‘attracted’ by the prospect of playing for Lampard’s side.

Lampard is also said to be an ‘admirer’ of Henderson, who has indicated that he would be open to leaving Manchester United again if he was unable to secure regular football.

Ajax are reportedly demanding around €30 million (£26.9m) for the 24-year-old.

And Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar has warned that their first-choice goalkeeper will not be allowed to leave for a reduced fee this summer.

‘There will always be some who benefit from a crisis and some clubs will have to sell for less, but I think we’re in a fortunate position thanks to our strong financial policy,’ he told NOS last month.

‘Therefore we don’t have to sell, but we made agreements with the players.

‘These won’t go below a certain price level. We won’t let go of our players for sale prices. We prefer to keep them here.’

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has said he never pinned Chelsea’s hopes of securing a Champions League berth on Manchester City’s ban.

The Blues have three games remaining this term to book their place in next season’s Champions League, with Monday’s decision from CAS to overturn City’s ban from Europe denting Chelsea’s chances of qualifying.

Fifth would have been enough for the Blues had City’s ban been upheld, but now they must finish inside the top four to clinch a Champions League spot.

Lampard’s side could end Monday clinging to a top-four spot by just one point, should Manchester United beat Southampton, but Lampard insists he was never banking on City’s ban remaining.

”I was pretty neutral on it really. I didn’t know much about the case, I just looked at the result at it this morning,” he said.

”I don’t see beyond the games in hand, we want to win them. I was never pinning my hopes on it, we just looked at ourselves.”

Striker Tammy Abraham has confirmed the Chelsea team didn’t need telling how disappointing their performance was after Saturday’s 3-0 thrashing by Sheffield United.

The 22-year-old returned to the starting line-up as the Blues failed to score for the first time in 10 Premier League matches and lost control of the race for the top four.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Abraham said he felt the way they started the encounter put themselves in a difficult position for trying to get back into the game.

Chelsea were already 2-0 down after little more than half an hour when an unmarked Oli McBurnie headed home, adding to David McGoldrick’s first ever top-flight goal.

Asked how Frank Lampard reacted to the defeat, Abraham admitted the manager shared the frustration of his players when in the dressing room at Bramall Lane.

He explained: “He let us know how he was feeling after the game. We got into the changing room and we already knew ourselves so there wasn’t much for him to say.

“We didn’t start the game sharp, but you have to give credit to Sheffield United for how they disrupted the way we wanted to play,” the England international continued. “They scored an early goal which frustrated us, and we didn’t react.

“In games like this, we know we can’t start slow and that’s what we did. They got an early goal and that boosted them to put in a good performance.”

Abraham added: “We changed our formation at half-time and played a bit better but by then we’d already made a few mistakes and they had scored two goals.

“We then threw bodies forward and we’re very vulnerable when we lose the ball high up the pitch. That’s something we need to improve on. We’re still a young, learning team but if we want to be the best and win titles that’s something we have to manage.”

Chelsea remain third in the table despite the unhelpful result, but Leicester City and Manchester United could overtake them with wins in their games in hand this weekend.

After Norwich at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Chelsea travel to Anfield to face the champions before rounding off the season at home to fellow European contenders Wolves.

Although their chances of reaching the Champions League are now out of their hands, Abraham encouraged Chelsea to keep focused in case any of their rivals drop points.

“It’s disappointing for us to drop points at this late stage but we can’t let it affect us too much,” added Abraham. “We have important games ahead, so we just have to go out there and win every one of them.

“We have to be ready. We have some great sides coming up, so we have to put this game to bed and go again, take the confidence from the season we’ve had and go into those games with full confidence.

“It’s all about our reaction in the next game now. We had a disappointing result against West Ham and we reacted well against Watford so we need to do that again.”

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claim Chelsea are ’closely’ following Real Madrid forward Luka Jovic.

Jovic, 22, earned his £55million transfer to Real Madrid after an outstanding two-season spell with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The seven-cap Serbia international scored 36 goals and provided nine assists in 75 appearances – helping the Bundesliga side reach the Europa League semi-final stage.

But things haven’t gone according to plan since signing a six-year contract with Zinedine Zidane’s side.

Jovic has managed just two goals in 25 appearances for Real Madrid and those came during thrashings of Osasuna and rock-bottom Leganes.

Sheffield United krossade Chelsea.

McGoldricks anfallskollega Ollie McBurnie utökade sedan hemmaledningen, Enda Stevens välriktade inlägg hamnade hos McBurnie som distinkt nickade in 2–0.

Should Chelsea land Sankoh, it remains to be seen whether the striker would break into Lampard’s first team or play with the Under-23s.

Lampard has proven this season he’s willing to give youth a chance if he feels they’re good enough.

Blues boss Lampard has been vocal on the club’s transfer plans, insisting Chelsea are ready to strengthen.

”We have the good young players, we have had experienced players around them that have helped them this year, but we know there are little areas within the squad [we can improve],” Lampard said.

”Some of that’s what we have already, some of that’s how we might look to recruit going forward.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1308070/-

Should they lose, and Leicester and United both win their matches in hand, then it would put the pressure on. And, suddenly, any prospect of landing Havertz would be in doubt.

Chelsea need the top four to land the Leverkusen star. If they fail to achieve that, then it’s likely the Leverkusen star will head elsewhere.

Real Madrid want to sign him, despite Zinedine Zidane seeing the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos get back to their best over in Spain.

And Bayern Munich remain interested, too, despite spending big on landing Leroy Sane from Manchester City.

Chelsea need to win against Sheffield United to beat their chances of signing Havertz. If they don’t, then the transfer saga will only take another twist.

Chelsea ’s continued pursuit of Kai Havertz will excite any Blues supporters that have seen him play.

The Bayer Leverkusen youngster has been in great form this season, particularly since the Bundesliga’s restart, and a move to Stamford Bridge would significantly boost Frank Lampard’s options in attack.

Havertz has the ability to play in a range of positions including as an attacking midfielder through the middle or on the right as well as a centre forward at times. The variety that the 21-year-old has already shown suggests that he would be a great signing for the Blues and one that has frequently been proven as difficult to play against.

Experience in the Bundesliga, Champions League and Europa League means that Havertz has already faced a wide range of opposition – and many opposing teams have spoken highly of the German international.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the best quotes from players and coaches that have been on the receiving end of the £90million man’s qualities as well as those lucky enough to play with him.

Kai Havertz has been regularly linked with a transfer to Chelsea

Kai Havertz has been regularly linked with a transfer to Chelsea

Joachim Löw (German national team manager)

Havertz is very highly-rated on the international stage and Löw’s praise of the youngster suggests he will play at many major tournaments in the future.

One thing that makes the Bayer Leverkusen forward such a unique prospect is how he manages to read the game to perfection despite being 21 years old. As Löw outlines, that type of maturity is rarely seen in younger players.

He said: “To play such a season at 19 and score 17 goals is exceptional.

“With Kai Havertz I asked myself after the first time he trained with us whether he could’ve already been with us for a year or two. It seemed as if he’d always played with the others. I’ve seen that very, very rarely with a player before.”

(Image: Bongarts/Getty Images)

Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

For all of the transfer speculation surrounding Havertz, Bayern Munich perhaps provide the most competition to Chelsea in trying to acquire his services in the next transfer window.

However, the Bundesliga champions purchased Leroy Sane from Manchester City last week and that could provide the Blues with a boost given that transfer funds are expected to be limited for the majority of sides.

Nevertheless, Muller has spoken about the talents of the 21-year-old who he believes is one of the top players in Europe and would be a player he’d love to play with at Bayern Munich.

Muller said: ”In my last few years with the national team, I still enjoyed to train and play with him.

”Kai Havertz is an extremely good player. If not, at that age, a top talent in Europe.

“He has such good skills and of course we at Bayern always want to have the players with the best skills.

”I have no insight into the financial area of Mr. Dreesen [the club’s vice-chairman] and the sports director area. I don’t know now what is planned.”

Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea)

The Chelsea centre back has already been credited with persuading Timo Werner to join the Blues – and Havertz could be next.

With all three players representing Germany in the past, Rudiger knows the 21-year-old’s talents well and described the first time he saw the Chelsea target train for the national team.

He told Sky Germany, via football.london: ”Kai is talented, when I saw him train with the Germany national team I was like, ’wow!’

”I would be lying to you if I said I didn’t want him at Chelsea.”

Rudiger’s reported influence in Werner’s arrival proved to be a key piece of transfer business behind the scenes and high praise of another Chelsea target could see Havertz arrive at Stamford Bridge very soon.

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/how-kai-havertzs-team-mates-22334323

”This came out very suddenly, I think it has to do with one Antonio Rudiger having a word with Kai Havertz,” Marcotti told ESPN FC of speculation linking Havertz to Chelsea, with Rudiger believed to have had words with his fellow Germany international about a switch.

”It certainly leaked out big time in Germany and was followed up everywhere. I don’t know. I have no inside information on this.

”If we’re to believe Bayer Leverkusen saying that they want €100m (£90m) or otherwise they won’t let him go, if we believe that yeah they took a financial hit but equally they think Havertz could be worth more down the road which is why they’re holding out for a certain price, I don’t quite know where Chelsea come into this. Apart from the fact that Antonio Rudiger is a lovely guy.

”Because the reality is, from a footballing perspective, Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner for next season, you already have Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic.

”If you want to go the false nine route, Tammy Abraham plus Olivier Giroud who has extended [his contract] as well.

Werner is backed to have a big impact at Chelsea

Werner has been tipped to hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge (Picture: Getty Images)

Former RB Leipzig assistant coach Jesse Marsch says Chelsea new boy Timo Werner’s ‘special’ ability is managing to avoid injury despite being lightning quick.

The Blues completed a £53 million deal to bring the Germany international to Stamford Bridge after yet another impressive season in the Bundesliga.

In his final ever appearance for Leipzig, Werner netted a brace to become their all-time leading scorer on 95 goals over his four-year spell at the club.

And as well as being a natural goalscorer, the 24-year-old has managed to avoid major injury, which Marsch hopes will continue when he arrives at Chelsea.

‘He will work against the ball, he will defend, he’ll work for the team, and the other thing that’s so special about Timo is that for a guy who sprints so much in a game, he’s always healthy,’ Marsch told Bleacher Report’s Football Ranks podcast.

‘That’s unusual, those sprinters that are so aggressive, they pick up a lot of soft-tissue muscle injuries. Timo has been incredibly fit and hopefully, he can stay that way.’

Lampard will have to fit plenty of attacking talent into one team

Lampard will have plenty of attacking options next season (Picture: Getty Images)

After the signings of Werner and Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech, Frank Lampard will have a tough job deciding on how to set up him side next season.

The German forward can play in any of the three positions across the front three, but Marsch believes he is particularly effective when coming inside from the left.

‘He likes to drift to the left and then come in with his right,’ he added.

‘He can drag the ball [out wide] and cross it or come across the goal as well.

‘He’s also good at finishing crosses from the right side when he’s attacking in the box, but he’s also good in the middle and he’s good on the right, too.

‘I think if you’re playing with two strikers, which is what we did often at Leipzig, we gave them freedom to move to the left.

‘We built that in tactically so he could find ways to be on the move but dangerous, but he could play as a second striker, he could play on the right, he can play in a front three, he can play any of those positions.’

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz is keen to link up with Timo Werner at Chelsea

Kai Havertz is attracted by the prospect of playing alongside Timo Werner at Chelsea, according to reports.

Frank Lampard’s side are leading the race to sign Havertz this summer and are already in talks with the midfielder’s representatives.

Chelsea have reportedly indicated that they are willing to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s €100 million (£89.8m) asking price but are keen to pay in installments.

Havertz, meanwhile, is looking to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer and 21-year-old is open to joining Chelsea on the condition that they secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Havertz is also keen on the idea of joining Chelsea because he would link up with Werner, who has already completed his £47.5m move to Stamford Bridge.

Havertz has a good relationship with Werner following their time together with Germany’s national team and the pair could become an integral part of Chelsea’s bid to win the Premier League title next season.

Romano also claims that during talks with Havertz’s representatives, Chelsea were informed that the midfielder is also impressed by the club’s project and Frank Lampard’s plans.

Leverkusen, however, are expected to stand firm over their €100m (£89.8m) valuation.

Speaking last week before the DFB Pokal final defeat to Bayern Munich, Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller claimed the 21-year-old is the best player in the the club’s history.

‘We’ve had many good players through the history of the club at Bayer Leverkusen, but Kai Havertz is the best of them all,’ Voller said.

Liverpool have also expressed an interest in Havertz but have been put off by the midfielder’s high asking price.

Bayern Munich have also pulled out of the running to sign the midfielder this summer after securing a £55m deal to sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City last week.

Real Madrid are a similar position to Bayern Munich as they are keen on Havertz but must offload players before they look to bolster their squad with new signings.

Chelsea are the favourites to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, but are not willing to pay the £90m asking price.

Havertz wants to leave Leverkusen and the German club are prepared to allow his exit. The 21-year-old has only two years remaining on his contract and Leverkusen have failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Bundesliga side value Havertz at €100m (£90m) but his representatives are hopeful a deal can be structured with bonus payments and add-ons that would satisfy all parties.

Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton says Bayer Leverkusen’s £90m asking price for Kai Havertz is too much

Chelsea have already shown they are prepared to invest in the transfer market this summer by signing Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech for next season.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich is willing to bankroll transfers this summer as he believes there is more value in the market, with prices dropping because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea have already singed Havertz's Germany team-mate Timo Werner from RB Leipzig ahead of next season Chelsea have already singed Havertz's Germany team-mate Timo Werner from RB Leipzig ahead of next season

Chelsea’s rivals may also struggle to compete in the market, with the European Club Association estimating European clubs will lose more than £3.5 billion in revenue over the next year because of the pandemic.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich also want Havertz but they are not in a position to pay Leverkusen’s asking price without selling players. Manchester United are also interested but their priority signing this summer is Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

’Havertz would improve any PL team’

Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann…

”A lot of Premier League clubs will be interested in Havertz, he’s a terrific player and there’s not many better around at the moment.

”If you look at Manchester United, it’s very clear they need new personnel going forward, and I think he’d improve pretty much every team. Liverpool are a bit different with the way they set-up and play, but besides that he improves every team.

”Before the break people were talking about three figures, a hundred-odd million, if that’s a price any club is prepared to pay in the summer, I’m not sure, but the likelihood is he will leave Leverkusen and take on another challenge in the summer.”

Sticking with Kyle Walker-Peters, then. Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has certainly been impressed by the defender, but is uncertain whether a permanent deal will be made.

“Yeah he’s in a good way. Must stay hungry and must show up until the end of the season and then we can decide.

”We see a future here, yes,” Mourinho said. ”But we always see a future outside where he can be happy. The reason why he went to Southampton was not because we pushed him to go.

”But if his desire is to be playing every time and leaving the club in search of happiness I don’t think we’d stop him.

”He’s a player with a good value in the market but I don’t think we’d stop him doing it.”

Rojo ’likely’ to leave Man Utd this summer

Marcos Rojo is likely to leave Manchester United this summer, according to the players’ agent.

The Argentine was on the periphery of the United squad prior to a January loan move to boyhood club Estudiantes, making just nine appearances.

“I couldn’t comment on what Solskjaer thinks but I think it’s obvious,” Johnathan Barnett told Stretty News. ”I think with Rojo, probably [a move] is more than likely somewhere else.”

On whether a permanent move could be to Argentina, Barnett said “I don’t know yet. I’m not sure.”

Keown: Ozil has no future at Arsenal

Martin Keown believes his former club Arsenal must move on Mesut Ozil this summer to ”protect the next generation”

The German remains on the periphery of Arsenal’s squad following Mikel Arteta’s arrival, despite being reinstated into the first-team following the Spaniard’s initial arrival.

Ozil is yet to play a single minute since the restart, and the former Gunners defender believes he no longer has a future at the club.

Photo: Getty

”I think it’s a real shame, because he had a magnificent talent, but if you’re not prepared to work hard out of possession for the team, then you don’t get to play in the new Arsenal at the moment and that’s what Arteta is all about.

”Work ethic comes first and then everything else is a bonus, you play from there. Clearly he’s not seeing enough on the training pitch.”

Klopp: Liverpool unlikely to recruit

Jurgen Klopp has reiterated that Liverpool are unlikely to be able to dip into the transfer market this summer as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “Are there players out there on the market who could help us as well? Probably, yes. This is the challenge for us, to improve a really good football team.

“This team is how it is but that doesn’t mean we will not strengthen, we don’t want to strengthen.

“If we have to and we have the opportunity and we have the financial resources then it will always happen and we will always try.

“But at the moment it’s really, really a difficult time and this team makes pressure on each other by themselves internally. Training quality is really important and high.

“This is a difficult year for all football clubs in the world and I don’t think it’s a time where we talk about transfers like the rest around us did not happen.”

When does the 2020 summer transfer window open?

The Premier League’s chief executive, Richard Masters, has confirmed that the window is not set to open until the end of the season.

The campaign is currently scheduled to finish on Sunday July 26th, though the FA Cup Final will be held on August 1.

Therefore, August 2 seems a likely date for the window to open, though Masters admitted there is not yet a plan for how long it would go on for – especially with no dates yet confirmed for the 2020/21 season.

A summer transfer window usually lasts at least 12 weeks. Recent reports suggest Fifa will allow leagues to open their windows up to four weeks before the culmination of the season.

Players can be officially registered with their new clubs when the Fifa international window opens on July 1 – such as Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner with Chelsea – though Fifa guidelines suggest players joining in July will not be able to play for their new clubs during the current 2019-20 season.

From January 1 onwards, Premier League players with six months left on their contract have been able to negotiate and agree pre-contract deals with foreign clubs.

Some players have signed short-term deals with their clubs to finish the current season, but there is no obligation for players to do so. However, they will not be able to play for a new team this season even if they become a free agent due to Fifa regulations on registrations.

Blåvitts kull 03:or verkar vara synnerligen talangfull.

Åtminstone tillfälligt, då Leicester möter Arsenal senare under tisdagskvällen.

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen (AP)

Kai Havertz is keen on joining Chelsea this summer and does not want to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season, according to reports.

The 21-year-old is one of Europe’s most in-demand young midfielders as he has attracted interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Having already secured deals for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner and Ajax’s attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea are keen to strengthen even more and have positioned themselves in the race for Havertz.

Reports in Germany this week have claimed that Havertz’s representatives are fully aware of Chelsea’s interest in completing a deal this summer.

And according to The Guardian, a move to Chelsea ‘appeals’ to Havertz, with Frank Lampard’s side ‘leading the race’ to sign the midfielder from Leverkusen.

The report also claims that the Germany international is looking to leave Leverkusen this summer, while Bayern are not prepared to spend big on the midfielder this year.

Leverkusen have initially demanded over €100 million (£89.5m) for Havertz, while reports claim that Chelsea are £20m apart in their valuation of the midfielder.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen’s former CEO, Reiner Calmund, believes the German club will stick to their €100m (£89.5m) asking price for Havertz.

‘Havertz scores goals with his left foot, right foot and his head. That is an exceptional quality to have. He is also versatile, fit, technically strong and fast. He is an exceptional talent,’ Calmund told Goal.

‘The two Bayer managing directors Fernando Carro and Rudi Voller, like the supervisory board chairman Werner Wenning, have committed themselves to €100m as the basis for negotiations. The three Bayer bosses will not move significantly away from this amount.

‘At Leverkusen we had three absolutely exceptional midfielders in Michael Ballack, Emerson and Bernd Schuster, whose careers I have followed intensively from the start.

‘Ballack was the most dangerous, Emerson shone with his versatility and Schuster was great from a strategic point of view. If you compare these guys to Havertz when they were 21 years old, Kai is superior to all three.

‘Voller also shares this view that none of the three at this age had such skill. He explained to me that Havertz would also be the more exceptional player in the medium term.’

Chelsea are reportedly set to offer Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz a five-year deal as they continue to revamp the squad this summer.

Blues boss Frank Lampard has already added striker Timo Werner and Ajax forward Hakim Ziyech to his ranks for a combined initial fee of £83.5m.

Now, they are looking to further strengthen their squad with the addition of 21-year-old playmaker Havertz, who has been a regular in Leverkusen’s line up since bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old and is said to be coveted by most of Europe.

According to a report from Italian transfer expert Nicolo Schira, the Blues are already in talks with his agent and are set to offer him a five-year-deal worth €8m-a-year (£7.2m).

Chelsea are said to be pursuing Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz

Marina Granovskaia is said to be spearheading negotiations, with Chelsea willing to offload six players in order to finance the move.

Bayer Leverkusen are determined to get top dollar for their prize asset, with the club’s former CEO Reiner Calmund claiming they will demand a fee of around €100m (£90.3m) for the midfielder.

Speaking to Goal, Calmund said: ”Havertz scores goals with his left foot, right foot and his head. That is an exceptional quality to have. He is also versatile, fit, technically strong and fast. He is an exceptional talent.

According to The Times, manager Frank Lampard is particularly keen on the Hammers midfielder as he believes he has the attributes of a high-class centre-back.

In fact, Lampard believes he can become as successful as Chelsea great Terry in defence, even though he plays in midfield for West Ham.

Chelsea are set to press ahead with a move for Kai Havertz, after his season with Bayer Leverkusen ended in defeat in the German Cup Final — and Frank Lampard is considering a move for West Ham’s Declan Rice to help improve his defence.

Lampard has identified Havertz as one of his top targets and Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21-year-old has been given a boost after Bayern Munich pulled out of the race to sign him.

Real Madrid have shown an interest in Havertz, but Lampard hopes to strengthen his attacking options further, following the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Havertz, who is valued at £70million, is expected to leave Leverkusen after they missed out on Champions League qualification. He is nowset for talks with the club over his future, after they lost 4-2 to Bayern in Saturday’s final.

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Rice, after identifying the West Ham youngster as a possible centre-back option, as Lampard bids to shore up his defence.

Rice is a boyhood Chelsea fan and spent seven years in their academy before being released when he was 14. He has predominantly played as a midfielder, but played as a centre-back coming through the ranks at West Ham.

The Hammers, like most clubs facing the harsh financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, may sell players to raise cash this summer, but they do not want to lose Rice. David Moyes has said he sees the 21-year-old, contracted until 2024, as a key part of his plans.

Chelsea also want to sign Leicester’s England left-back Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea have made an explosive start to the summer transfer window by adding Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to their ranks.

An initial €40million (£36m) deal was agreed with Ajax for Ziyech in February while Werner’s arrival from RB Leipzig was confirmed after triggering his release clause last month.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is willing to back Frank Lampard after an encouraging maiden campaign in the Stamford Bridge dugout but the club want to clear deadwood to make room for Havertz, who is valued at £90m by Leverkusen.

Express Sport understands Marcos Alonso, Michy Batshuayi, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kenedy and Danny Drinkwater are among the players who are likely to be shipped out.

Emerson Palmieri is the sixth man on the list and Inter Milan have opened talks with Chelsea about signing the Italy international.
