“I think that will be interesting. He has an amazing future. I think everyone thinks that.”

Mount is set to make Gareth Southgate’s starting XI against the Czech Republic this evening after James Maddison withdrew from the squad with an illness, and his international boss has praised him for his recent displays at club level.

Southgate said when asked what he made of the prospect: “Exactly what I thought of him when I saw him at 16 playing for our U16s.

”He’s a quality player, an intelligent footballer, presses well, has a real eye for goal, good quality.

  • “From when the manager came in he told us the style of play, how he wanted us to play, how to press.

“At first, I couldn’t do it. I had no energy.

“But as the season has gone on, I’ve got used to it.

“Now we know what he wants in the press, so for us, it’s about giving defenders no time on the ball — just rushing them.”

  • Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League table after back-to-back wins over Brighton and Southampton, and Avram Grant has been full of praise for Frank Lampard.

The former Portsmouth boss took change at Stamford Bridge between 2007 and 2008, winning 36 of his 54 games as boss, and has now picked out Frank Lampard as a coach he respects.

“Chelsea have a good coach, with good players,” Grant told The Athletic.

“It is a good environment, they are more relaxed in a good way that is healthy for the players.

  • Ruben Dias (Benfica)

Lampard was willing to let David Luiz join Arsenal on transfer deadline day last summer, confident in the abilities of Andreas Christensen or Kurt Zouma to take over in central defence.

However, a serious injury to Antonio Rudiger has exposed the duo’s frailties and it has been youngster Tomori who has steadied the ship in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old is an excellent long-term option for Chelsea but the Blues will almost certainly look to strengthen in defence, with Ruben Dias reportedly the subject of intense scouting.

Both Manchester clubs have also shown interest in the 22-year-old so they will have to act fast, while Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar has been touted as another potential target.

  • 2 – Have a word with Fikayo Tomori

While Tomori’s debut season as a Chelsea regular has been near plain-sailing so far, an error leading to a goal will come sooner rather than later if Lampard doesn’t chat to him about his awareness in defence.

On a couple of occasions against Southampton at the weekend, Tomori got too confident for his own good and if it were not for the team-mates around him, things could have got ugly for the 21-year-old.

But as well as the Southampton game, Tomori also nearly cost Chelsea against Lille in the Champions League when he fired a back pass at Kepa Arrizabalaga, who managed to deal with the situation despite the opposition striker bearing down on him.

His screamer of a strike against Wolves, though, is Tomori’s highlight this season, but he’s also shown his immense confidence at the back. It wouldn’t hurt him to, however, to let him know when is best to show that confidence.

  • Manchester United coaches know they are asking too much of their young stars to help turn around the club’s fortunes, similar to what is happening at Chelsea.

United have made their worst start to a season in 30 years and currently find themselves just two points off the relegation zone after eight games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose position as manager is becoming increasingly under threat, insists the team’s form will pick up one several of his stars are back from injury.

But it is becoming increasingly obvious that the current squad of players is not strong enough to compete at the top end of the Premier League.

The lack of options available to Solskjaer has led him to field several younger players so far this season.

And the Norwegian has repeatedly talked up the crop of youngsters in which he is placing such faith.

Last month, he said 18-year-old forward Mason Greenwood was ”one of the best finishers I have seen”, despite him never starting a Premier League game.

According to the BBC though, coaches at Old Trafford know they are asking too much of Greenwood, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Brandon Williams to come in and improve the team at the moment.

And they note that Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori – who have all excelled for Chelsea this season – have had two or three loan spells away from Stamford Bridge to further their footballing education.

Abraham, who has scored eight Premier League goals this season and turned 22 on October 2, is four weeks older than Marcus Rashford, who is having to shoulder United’s attacking responsibilities virtually on his own.

Mount has been brilliant for Frank Lampard’s side after returning from a loan spell with Championship side Derby County last season.

Tomori joined Mount at Pride Park and has also began to flourish after a loan spell, as did Ruben Loftus-Cheek before his injury at the end of last season.

The fear at the club is United’s youngsters will get so used to losing, it will become a hard habit to break.

A 1-0 loss to struggling Newcastle United on Sunday means the team go into the international beak with lots to ponder.

Solskjaer will be hoping for everyone to be up to speed fitness wise ahead of the daunting clash with Liverpool in two weeks time.

Life at Anfield could not be more different at the moment with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to equal the record of 18 successive Premier League wins.

  • Over at Chelsea, Frank Lampard has been giving his young players a chance to prove themselves.

Tammy Abraham has flourished this season, scoring eight goals from as many matches in the top flight, while Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have caught the eye too.

United’s coaches are said to feel, though, that there’s a big difference between the respective sets of players.

They supposedly think Chelsea’s young guns have been better prepared for the first team by spending time out on loan elsewhere.

Abraham spent time at Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa before returning to Stamford Bridge back in the summer.

Mount, meanwhile, had enjoyed positive loan spells at Vitesse and Derby County, playing under Lampard during his time with the latter.

  • 1) Liverpool show steel on top of silky skill

Leicester seriously pushed Liverpool on Saturday, but the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s side were able to grind out a result is testament to the steel they now possess. Broadly speaking, Liverpool haven’t played particularly well so far this season, and yet they find themselves eight points ahead of Manchester City at this early juncture in the Premier League year. It is perhaps cliche to say that the best teams still manage to win when they are playing badly, but it is Liverpool’s grit and grind on such occasions that is quickly propelling them away at the top of the table.

    2) De Bruyne absence helps Wolves highlight City’s flaws

We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

Conversely, Manchester City played badly and lost against Wolves, twice ravaged in transition by Wolves’ speed on the counter-attack, with Raul Jimenez superbly setting up Adama Traore in quick succession. Aymeric Laporte’s injury has robbed City of their most secure and space aware defender, and you wonder if teams will begin to take the game to Manchester City more with Pep Guardiola hurting for defensive stock. More worryingly for Guardiola, perhaps, was how lacking in creativity City looked without Kevin De Bruyne, and Wolves defended superbly to pick up a fine victory.

    3) Little light at the end of the tunnel for United

Newcastle United are not a very good football team, with problems myriad in all areas of the pitch plaguing a poor start to the season. And yet here they were, looking rather serene on their way to a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has major issues, namely at the top of the pitch, where Marcus Rashford looks increasingly ineffectual and Juan Mata is actively detrimental to his side’s forward movements. United have no creators, nobody capable of progressing the ball in midfield, and no centre forward capable of shouldering the attacking burden. For a side so infused with youth they look remarkably moribund, and it is hard to foresee anything other than further struggles.

    4) Chelsea’s transfer ban was a blessing in disguise

Another good victory for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, who are playing with real vibrancy and confidence. Lampard was afforded time at the start of the season with neither clubs nor fans overreacting to a sloppy start, and thus was able to keep faith in his youth movement, and the injection of youthful energy into his side is beginning to bear fruit. Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori are all playing at a high level, and Callum Hudson-Odoi is back to add further potency to what now looks a complete side. One wonders if this precocious quartet would have been afforded such extended opportunities had Chelsea been able to recruit new players in the summer.

    5) Arsenal win a game of two halves

It was far from Arsenal’s best win, but Unai Emery will be pleased his side managed to hang on for a  nervy 1-0 victory over Bournemouth. The Gunners were good in the first half, with the midfield of Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Dani Ceballos looking semi-competent and rounded, but they let the game slip in the second half, and Bournemouth had their chances to level. Still, a gutsy win of this manner should build belief in the Arsenal squad, which should stand them in good stead going forward.

    6) Pochettino needs to leave Spurs – but where would he go?

Brighton utterly dismantled Tottenham, the better side from the word go and deserved winners. But Spurs were again abject, and something needs to change at the club to jolt a drifting squad back into life. Where is that change going to come from, though? Tottenham cannot really afford to sack Mauricio Pochettino with few suitable replacements available, and potential suitors for the Argentine manager seem to have cooled their interest. Real Madrid now favour Jose Mourinho, Niko Kovac appears to be settling Bayern Munich back down, and Pochettino would be a fool to go to Manchester United at this point. Tottenham are in a tricky spot, and you sense that this poor patch may go on for a while longer yet.

    7) Villa show their attacking might

Neutral spectators would have found themselves rather entertained at Carrow Road on Saturday, as Norwich and Aston Villa produced a combined 43 shots, split almost down the middle. That Aston Villa were able to score five with just 42% of possession is credit to their attacking might. Wesley scored a brace that will do the Brazilian centre forward a world of good leading the line, and with Anwar El Ghazi and Jack Grealish beginning to buzz about in and around the sizeable striker, Villa suddenly look a side capable of scoring plenty this season after a slow start to the season.

  • It was a tough weekend for Manchester United fans once again, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men losing 1-0 at Newcastle.

Matthew Longstaff, Sean’s brother – who was wanted by United in the summer – netted the winner at St James’ Park.

Chelsea and Arsenal, meanwhile, both picked up important wins.

The Blues dominated at Southampton in a 4-1 win, while the Gunners edged past Bournemouth at the Emirates.

  • Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has opted to leave Christian Pulisic out of his starting XI over the past few games, with Pedro, Willian, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mason Mount above him in the pecking order.

The 21-year-old is yet to show fans his potential at Stamford Bridge after impressing in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, and he is willing to stay and fight for a chance under Lampard.

The Mail on Sunday have claimed that that United States international will battle for a place in the team by trying to impress in training, but will consider leaving if he doesn’t see the right opportunity.

“I spoke to him two days before the Grimsby game and was very clear about the standards and we have to give him the fact that he’s moved country and moved leagues,” said Lampard earlier in the season.

It was between Willian and Pedro for the experienced winger’s spot, and the Brazilian got the nod.

Willian showed he has still got it with a vital late winner against Lille in the Champions League on Wednesday.

  • Liverpool take on Leicester at Anfield while Manchester United travel to Newcastle to take on Steve Bruce’s Magpies.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are expected to have a tough encounter against Brendan Rodgers’ high-flying Foxes, who are set to end the host’s perfect start to the Premier League season.

According to The Script, an experiment completed by BT Sport before the start of the season, a 0-0 draw is set to bore fans on Merseyside on Saturday, with the same scoreline due to take place the following day with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

The stats have also guessed what will happen in the other 1- fixtures that are taking place this weekend, with good results for both Tottenham and Chelsea.

  • 1. Rodgers returns to Anfield – and Leicester could beat Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers returns to Anfield for the first time since leaving Liverpool, and he brings with him a Leicester side fully capable of ending Jurgen Klopp’s side’s winning start. Liverpool may have made a perfect Premier League start but they have looked somewhat vulnerable at the back, particularly beyond the right side of their defence.

Leicester may well look to spring Jamie Vardy behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez in the absence of Joel Matip, and they have plenty of quality to take advantage of any defensive insecurities Liverpool do have. HLC

    2. Spurs must bounce back

Following their Champions League embarrassment, Tottenham’s trip to Brighton has an added weight to it. Their looked to be back on track after a well-fought victory over Southampton last week but Bayern’s dominant display in midweek brought them back down to earth. After a run of inconsistent performances, facing Brighton – who haven’t won since the opening day against Watford – could be what kick-starts Spurs’ season.

With the teams placed fourth and eleventh separated by just two points, it’s vital they keep pace and not fall by the wayside. AdR

    3. Wolves sense another potential scalp

Wolves have quietly gathered themselves in recent games. Perhaps it was that penalty shootout win over Reading in the League Cup that galvanised them: since then they have beaten Watford in the Premier League before a vital 1-0 Europa League victory over Besiktas over Thursday night. The game in Istanbul offered something of a template for Sunday’s trip to the Etihad: soak up the pressure, limit their opponents to a few half-chances, before hitting them with a sucker-punch.

Manchester City present a substantially tougher task, but Wolves’ record against the top six was outstanding last season and they will not be overawed at the Etihad. LO

    4. Unai Emery’s midfield muddle

There is a sense that Unai Emery has not quite figured out how to sculpt the Arsenal midfield ahead of their game with Bournemouth. Granit Xhaka offers little but has been named captain, while Lucas Torreira is lacking in both form and a definite role. Matteo Guendouzi has impressed, yes, but with Joe Willock so good in the Europa League and the bizarre exclusion of Dani Ceballos somewhat inexplicable, this could be the perfect opportunity to look at a new combination in midfield.

Bournemouth are yet to pick up a point at the Emirates Stadium, but possess forward players who can cause damage in an unstable contest. Emery needs to get his selection right. HLC

    5. Weary rivals renew hostilities

One of the great old Premier League rivalries will renew on Sunday with both clubs wandering directionless into their meeting at St James’ Park. Steve Bruce took on a funereal tone as he attempted to explain Newcastle’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Leicester City last weekend, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for a more chipper message following United’s draw with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night – one that smacked of delusion.

Solskjaer surely cannot afford to extend United’s winless away streak beyond its current 10-game run, but perhaps the oddest part of this game is that, given United’s shortcomings, Newcastle will be disappointed not to get something from the game too. LO

    6. Frank Lampard and evolution rather than revolution

Five or four at the back for Chelsea against Southampton? Frank Lampard has found a degree of success with both systems in recent weeks, but the former looks particularly solid, with the remnants of the Antonio Conte era are rediscovering themselves in a back five.

Indeed, for all the talk of revolution at Stamford Bridge, Lampard has largely allied himself to the systems that have gone before – Sarri’s 4-3-3, Conte’s 3-4-3 – partially due to Chelsea’s inability to bring players in during the transfer window, and it seems he may be settling on the latter for the medium-term. Evolution, then, rather than revolution.

Southampton have similar questions over their set-up – it was a five against Tottenham last week after Cedric pulled up in the warm-up, but Hasenhuttl may return to his favoured 4-2-2-2 as Southampton look to best Chelsea. HLC

    7. Marco Silva and Everton need to produce

As they have done for many-a-season, Everton have struggled to meet pre-season expectations. This season, the Toffees have looked both scintillating in attack and porous in defence which has led to consistently inconsistent performances. Against Wolves, they looked unplayable but disappointing outings at Bournemouth and at home to Sheffield United have pegged them back.

A trip to Burnley won’t be easy for Marco Silva but it is in these games where he must prove Everton can be a team that could puncture the top six. Currently 15th, his side look far off that, and after a season in which they won 15 games and lost 14 last year, Silva must make his team more consistent to be considered a real threat. AdR

    8. Hammers a dark horse?

After a sketchy reintroduction to Premier League football against Manchester City, West Ham have quietly crept up the table. Now in fifth place, and only outside the top four on goal difference, Manuel Pellegrini has formed a side that looks like it can do what Everton can’t: take their chances and be hard to beat.

A good attacking side, their variety can benefit them highly. Sébastien Haller has shown to be a good all-around striker as well as a goal-scorer, Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko are coming into their own coming in off the wings and they can hurt you from direct set pieces.

A point behind them in 9th, however, Crystal Palace won’t be pushovers but West Ham may have too much firepower for them to handle. AdR

    9. Will Villa take off against Norwich?

Aston Villa have looked dangerous so far this season but have lacked true killer instincts. Dropping eight points from winning positions this term, closing out games has been Villa’s biggest problem and has seen them drop into the relegation zone. Facing Norwich – who sit just a point and a place ahead of them in 17th – this could be the chance Dean Smith’s side have been looking for.

Taking the lead against both Arsenal and Tottenham as well as performing well against established Premier League teams like Everton and Crystal Palace, Villa have shown they can compete at this level. But taking points from those in and around them could prove crucial for survival and they have a chance to do just that this weekend. AdR

    10. Sheffield United look to add to Watford’s strife

Ahead of the season, a trip to Watford may have looked daunting for a newly-promoted team. Seven games in, and there isn’t quite the same aura around Vicarage Road. Still searching for their first Premier League win of the season, the Hornets have looked lacklustre under both Javi Gracia and their new-old boss Quique Sanchez Flores.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, have looked anything but lacklustre. Chris Wilder has brought an exciting, hardworking team to the top flight and they look like they can cause anyone a problem.

Facing Liverpool without star striker, Billy Sharp, they still looked dangerous in attack and were unlucky to get anything out of the game. Translating a performance like that against the European champions to a struggling Watford shouldn’t be a problem and Wilder could push his team into the top half as Watford stay rock bottom. AdR

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante was full of praise for team-mate Tammy Abraham after the Blues’ 2-1 win against Lille on Wednesday.

Frank Lampard earned his first win in the Champions League after Willian hit a late winner in France.

Abraham put Chelsea ahead in the first half but Victor Osimhen equalised just nine minutes later to ensure the two sides were level at the break.

Abraham’s goal was his eighth goal of the season and his first in the Champions League for the club.

And Kante says the 22-year-old is doing ‘great things’ now that he has a regular chance to impress for the club.

‘We were expecting a complicated match,’ admitted Kante.

‘Frankly, Lille had a good game, they often put us in trouble, we wanted to win, we managed to win.

‘We’re going to be satisfied with this victory Tammy Abraham is a player who has been in Chelsea for a long time, he’s doing great things and scores a lot of goals, he scores tonight and it’s nice to have him’.

Ajax’s 3-0 win in Valencia means the Dutch giants are top of the group on six points while Chelsea are now level with the Spaniards.

  • Chelsea snapped up Stamford Bridge legend Frank Lampard this summer but a ban on signings has forced the club to focus on their talented youngsters

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard hadn’t planned to put his faith in youth this season.

That’s according to former Blues winger Joe Cole who reckons his old pal only made up his mind after watching the youngsters in training.

The west Londoners have been impressive this season with Lampard adopting an exciting and attacking style.

Cole is adamant that Lampard didn’t join the club with preconceived ideas, though.

“With Frank, I don’t think it was a conscience effort to come in and play these young players straight away,” he told BT Sport.

“I think he’s had a lot of his squad and because of the transfer ban there was more and more of them training and he’s looking at it and thinking: ‘well these guys are producing for me, they’re doing the business in pre-season’.

“I think it’s just happened that way organically. He’s doing well right now.”

Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over Lille last night in the Champions League.

It was one of Lampard’s more experienced players that grabbed the decisive goal.

Brazil international Willian scored an impressive second-half volley.

”It feels really good,” Lampard said after the clash.

“This was a really hard place to come, added to the pressure of not beating Valencia.

“And it was the first time for a few travelling in Europe.

”Tomori was outstanding again. He has to keep on with that. Now Ajax have set their stall out in the group.

“This gives us confidence and points. Now the hard work begins.”

Cole’s fellow BT Sport pundit, Rio Ferdinand, lamented that Callum Hudson-Odoi wasn’t fit to feature.

“I think [Callum] Hudson-Odoi has been robbed of this spotlight because he got injured with a bad injury,” Ferdinand said.

“He is the guy. He is the potential superstar out of these boys.

“They have all got talent in other areas, but Hudson-Odoi is the one you would say is a shoo-in to play for England once he is fit.”

  • “We are just careful and it is my duty to work with him. The medical team are working so hard with him.

“At the moment he is playing catch-up and that’s no fault of his own. He has played four seasons now full-on, game after game with international tournaments.

”So, it is right to be a bit careful. Let’s be happy. We got a result here, we are doing okay. With N’Golo, when we do get him to where we want him to be, we will be stronger with him.”

Lampard’s comments suggest Kante will not be risked against Lille, with Mateo Kovacic expected to come back into the side after being rested at the weekend.

  • N'Golo Kante looks on while playing for Chelsea

Kante is a wanted man (Picture: Getty Images)

Maurizio Sarri is eyeing a raid on former club Chelsea as he bids to reunite with N’Golo Kante at Juventus.

The Italian manager, who left Stamford Bridge at the end of last season, has told Juventus vice chairman Pavel Nedved to test Chelsea’s resolve and attempt to lure the French midfielder to Serie A.

Sarri – whose side won 3-0 against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night – believes Kante is the missing puzzle piece to boasting Europe’s best midfield, and would deploy him alongside Miralem Pjanic and former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey, according to the Daily Mail.

With Emre Can, Adrien Rabiot, Blaise Matuidi, Sami Khedira and Rodrigo Bentancur also on the books, Sarri would have a wealth of talent at his disposal in the heart of midfield.

While Sarri is not typically hands on with transfers, preferring to get on with the job on the training pitch, he has made it very clear he feels Kante would be a dream addition as he bids to make his Juventus midfield the most dynamic in Italy.

Juventus are hoping to lure the 28-year-old away from Stamford Bridge for around £70million and are confident they have enough pulling power to convince him to leave the Premier League.

  • The only issue for the Catalan giants would be Willian’s age as he recently turned 31 and the club want to focus more on younger players.

Ernesto Valverde has shown a lot of attention to younger talent such as Frenkie de Jong, Arthur, Carles Perez, Ansu Fati, Rafinha and Carles Alena.

Willian joined Chelsea in the summer of 2013 just before he was ready to sign with Tottenham.

Since then the former Anzhi Makhachkala ace has made 299 appearances for the London giants.

  • The Champions League returns this week with three of England’s four representatives at home.

Liverpool host Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at Napoli, with Jurgen Klopp’s men heading into the encounter on the back of a narrow 1-0 Premier League win over Sheffield United.

Elsewhere, Tottenham welcome German giants Bayern Munich to north London, Manchester City go head-to-head with Dinamo Zagreb at the Etihad and Chelsea face a short trip to France to take on Lille.

Here, Mirror Sport takes a look at some of the main talking points before the second round of matches…

    Happy home for holders

Champions League football returns to Anfield for the first time since the 4-0 win against Barcelona
    (Image: REUTERS)

Champions League football returns to Anfield for the first time since that memorable 4-0 win against Barcelona in May, a night which has gone down in history as one of the best comebacks in the history of the competition.

While the Reds, unbeaten at home in the competition since 2014, are not likely to produce anything as dramatic as that when they host Red Bull Salzburg, they do need a win to get the defence of their crown up and running after defeat against Napoli a fortnight ago.

    Spurs face Bayern battle

    (Image: Julian Finney)

Tottenham are also need a good result after they failed to hold onto a 2-0 lead against Olympiakos on match day one. However, that may be a tough as the visitors are Bayern Munich.

There is no recent history between the two but if there are any omens their last meeting came in 1983 when Spurs won 2-0 to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat on their way to winning the UEFA Cup that season.

However, the Bundesliga giants have dropped just four points in the league this season courtesy of two draws; by contrast the hosts’ form is worse than patchy with just three wins in nine matches in all competitions.

Time for Pep to make a case for the defence

Dinamo Zagreb are unlikely to cause Manchester City many problems at the Etihad Stadium but manager Pep Guardiola would no doubt like to see a morale-boosting clean sheet after more questions were asked about his makeshift defence against Everton at the weekend.

Midfielder Fernandinho will be pressed into action again alongside Nicolas Otamendi in the centre and any further issues against the Croatians would leave Guardiola with more awkward questions to answer.

    Encouragement for Lampard in Lille

Chelsea suffered defeat by Valencia in their group stage opener

Chelsea appear to be running into some form after two confidence-boosting wins in a week ahead of their trip to Lille. That is exactly what they need as they head to the Stade Pierre Mauroy, where their opponents have not lost since March.

However, Ligue 1’s fourth-placed side – who have former Chelsea striker Loic Remy in their squad – have been inconsistent so far this season and that offers Blues boss Frank Lampard hope, especially after seeing 10 different players score in their last three matches.

    Barcelona v Inter Milan

Back-to-back La Liga wins have barely eased the scrutiny on Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde and the criticism will return with a vengeance should they fail to beat Serie A leaders Inter Milan at home.

Without the injured Lionel Messi, who is hopeful of being fit for the game after a thigh problem, the Catalan side have been exposed but even if the Argentina star does return he is yet to score in three matches against the Italians.

Inter have conceded just three goals in seven games and will arrive at the Nou Camp with a plan to, first and foremost, frustrate and negate. Barca, after a goalless draw in Dortmund, need a win and Valverde even more so.

  • “It felt like the atmosphere was toxic at Stamford Bridge last season. I know Maurizio Sarri achieved all the goals he was set – and won a European trophy – but as much as I never advocated his sacking, I do wonder whether these kids would have got through had he stayed.

“Circumstance has given Mount, Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, Tomori and James the opportunity of a lifetime. They have the hunger and ambition to make the most of it.”

Sarri was not universally popular amongst Chelsea fans last season, despite guiding the side to a top-four finish and winning the Europa League.

His style of possession-based football was considering boring by many in west London, while he was also criticised for his handling of Hudson-Odoi.

  • Chelsea star Jorginho says Frank Lampard has made significant alterations to the way he is utilised this season.

The holding midfielder was limited in his approach under Maurizio Sarri last season.

Jorginho rarely ventured forward, resulting in him registering zero assists and just one goal from open play throughout the campaign.

But Lampard has asked the Italy international to get himself more involved in attacking play in Chelsea’s more free-flowing formation.

Jorginho, 27, is flourishing in the role and is playing his best football since arriving from Napoli last summer.

“I have changed the way I play – I try to do what the coach wants so I can adapt myself,” he said.

”He wants more forward play, not too much short passing, so I am trying to do that.

”This season we are playing with more long balls, more runs, less short passing.

”It has changed, but the mentality is the same, pressing the other team and trying to have the control of the match.”

Lampard, who saw Jorginho score as his side sealed a 2-0 win over Brighton yesterday, hailed the Brazil-born star as a natural leader.

    (Image: GETTY)

”He’s a leader in his personality. Whatever happened last year, I wasn’t here,” said the Blues legend.

”For whatever reason, people will make judgements, but all I can judge is what I see in front of me and from pre-season he has been one of the leaders, clearly, in the dressing room and on the pitch.

”He wants to win, and I know that should be the basics and it is the basics for everyone, but to show it in everything you do is important. He does that, so I’m pleased with Jorgie and the young players need to look up to that attitude he has daily.”

Chelsea will be looking to secure their first Champions League points of the season when they travel to Lille on Wednesday night.

  • ”Today we put in a good performance, it was solid, it was comfortable, it was professional, it lacked more goals because we created enough to score three, four, five goals.

”But we got our clean sheet which is something we’ve been striving for, so it’s a good day all round and good for confidence in the dressing room.

”The home games have been frustrating so far for different reasons.

”Not that we’ve played terribly, it just hasn’t happened for us. Today was a nice one, you could have almost felt the frustration at half-time and not because we had a poor half or the ball hadn’t gone in the back of the net.

”We controlled every bit of the game and so now hopefully that gives everybody confidence.”

  • Jorginho impressed Arsenal legend Paul Merson as Chelsea beat Brighton

Paul Merson showered Jorginho with praise after Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Brighton and backed Frank Lampard’s side to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Brighton frustrated Chelsea for 50 minutes at Stamford Bridge before Adam Webster fouled Mason Mount inside the penalty area to allow Jorginho to break the deadlock from the spot.

Willian’s deflected strike with 15 minutes remaining sealed three points and Lampard was delighted to come away from the match with his first clean sheet as Chelsea manager.

Jorginho impressed from the base of Chelsea’s midfield throughout and Merson claimed the Italian was ‘absolutely outstanding’ after the final whistle.

The former Napoli star has now scored three goals in 11 appearances for the Blues this season.

‘I thought Jorginho was absolutely outstanding,’ former Arsenal midfielder Merson told Sky Sports.

‘What’s helping him is he’s got legs around him. He’s got [Mason] Mount, Willian, [Ross] Barkley, and he just gives them the ball, he can spray it around the pitch.

‘He is probably one of the best penalty takers in the league in my opinion, too.

Lampard's men recorded their first clean sheet of the season

Merson claims Chelsea are ‘a lot stronger than people think’ and believes Lampard’s side are more than capable of finishing in the top four.

‘There were phases in the game where they played very well.

‘In between those goals there were a lot of nerves from Chelsea and you could feel the nervousness in the stands from the fans.

‘The fans got nervous, the players got nervous but when they got that second goal they started passing it around again.

‘Every week they get another Premier League game under their belt and when you win football matches that breeds confidence.

‘It was stability at the start of the season and now you’re thinking “this could be top four”. They’ve got some very, very good players, Chelsea are a lot stronger than people think.’
