  • I förra veckan ställdes WSL in.

Trea kom Arsenal.

Liverpool slutade sist och får nästa säsong spela i The Championship.

  • Chelsea transfer target Timo Werner celebrates scoring for Leipzig against Tottenham in the Champions League

Timo Werner has reportedly agreed a deal in principle with Chelsea (Picture: Getty)

Tammy Abraham and Kepa Arrizabalaga have fuelled speculation that Timo Werner is on his way to Stamford Bridge by ‘liking’ a post on Instagram announcing Chelsea’s deal for the Leipzig striker.

Werner, 24, one of the most sought-after attacking players in Europe, looked destined for Anfield after Jurgen Klopp launched a charm offensive for his fellow countryman’s signature but Chelsea have capitalised on Liverpool’s recent dithering and hijacked the move.

Widespread reports in Germany and England on Thursday evening claim that Werner has now verbally agreed a switch to west London after the Blues offered him wages of £200,000-a-week.

Chelsea have made it clear that they are prepared to activate Werner’s £49million release clause and the Germany international looks set to become one of the highest paid players in the club’s history on a salary of £9.6m-a-year.

World Cup-winning France midfielder N’Golo Kante would remain Chelsea’s top earner on wages of £220,000-a-week.

Reacting to the rumours, Instagram account 433 shared the following with their 28 million followers: ‘BREAKING: @timowerner has reportedly agreed to join @chelseafc on a permanent transfer, according to @bbcsport ✅.’

It quickly became clear that two of their followers, Chelsea stars Abraham and Kepa, approved of the deal after ‘liking’ the post.

It appears Antonio Rudiger – who played a key role in convincing Werner to join the club – ‘liked’ it too but the defender has since ‘unliked’ the post.

Some reports suggest that Liverpool have pulled out of a move for Werner as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and its financial repercussions on their spending power.

Liverpool officials have decided they cannot justify spending such an amount on a player who would not guarantee a starting spot in Klopp’s side, with the Reds’ current attack of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino considered one of the finest in European football.

Manchester United have also been linked with Werner in recent weeks but will prioritise strengthening in other areas after extending Odion Ighalo’s loan move earlier this week.

Chelsea already wrapped up a £36m deal for Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech back in February, with the Moroccan putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester and England left-back Ben Chilwell is rumoured to be Frank Lampard’s next major target this summer.

  • Werner has already scored 31 goals this season, with 25 of them coming in 29 Bundesliga appearances.

That formidable hit rate is sure to ease the goalscoring burden on Tammy Abraham, who has led the line for Chelsea this term.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign, scoring 15 times in 34 outings, but is likely to cede his starting berth to the German international.

Werner had looked destined to join Liverpool, making no secret that Anfield was his preferred destination, but the Reds refused to commit to a transfer.

With his Chelsea kit on over a shirt and tie, Gullit is introduced to English football in June 1995

With his Chelsea kit on over a shirt and tie, Ruud Gullit is introduced to English football in June 1995

I’m still sad about the way it ended, but my time at Chelsea will always be my happy time. It was paradise for me.

It makes me feel very old that it’s 25 years since I moved to England, but sometimes it still seems like yesterday. I fell in love with London straight away because I found a kind of freedom that is priceless. It was my happy place and the Chelsea players were my ’lovely boys’ – let me try to explain why.

When I joined Chelsea, in June 1995, the Premier League was very different to the way it is now. I wasn’t the first overseas player to come here, but I was one of the first to arrive with a big name, from a bigger league, such as Serie A.

Looking back, that summer was probably the time the Premier League really began to change into the competition it is now, and it had to. Italy was the king then – all the best players were there. English football was very basic in comparison, and the English wanted to have people from outside so they could try to get their game back again to the highest European level.

Dennis Bergkamp, David Ginola, Juninho. They all came at the same time as me. The way I saw it, it was an adventure. Personally and professionally, I needed to leave Italy after eight years with AC Milan and Sampdoria and, with the Premier League taking off, England just seemed the right place for a fresh start, at the right time for me to do something new.

I was 32, nearly 33, I had been at the top for a long time and had won a lot too. Some people probably thought my legs had gone and I was coming here for the ride – to take the money and just get ready to retire. They were wrong.

Dutch forward Dennis Bergkamp also joined the Premier League scene in 1995, signing for Arsenal from Inter Milan

Nobody I spoke to that summer understood why I chose Chelsea. I must say I didn’t know much about the club or even that part of town when I went there – it was just because Glenn Hoddle was manager, that’s what persuaded me to go.

When I came for the first time to see Stamford Bridge, I was like ’what the hell kind of stadium is this?’ I was used to playing in the best stadiums in the world, but here there were only two stands. The place wasn’t just a building site, it was a total wreck. You had to walk around on planks of wood.

The training ground too, was very different to what I was used to. Chelsea’s facilities now are world class but then they were based at Harlington, which was a school. There was nothing there – just five little locker rooms, and the only thing in any of them was a wooden bench and a hook. That was it.

But I loved it. It was almost like I was going back to when I had just started playing, when I was nine years old. It was fantastic.

Of course I knew when I joined that Chelsea wouldn’t be challenging for the title. There was no Champions League for them then – they were not one of the top teams in England, let alone in Europe. But I knew where the club wanted to go, and I knew what was happening in English football – and I love challenges. It was the same when I left the Netherlands for AC Milan. When I arrived in 1987, they had not won a European trophy for 14 years. When I left, I had won two European Cups.

Glenn had to sell Chelsea and their ambition to me – he said they were at the start of a journey too – but what was most important was that it was Glenn. In the eyes of the Dutch, he was the best English footballer ever but in England he was not appreciated. In the Netherlands, we said ’oh my god, he was a player meant for us, not for you’.

He had first phoned me up a few months previously to say he wanted to sign me and because I saw him as a player who played skilful football, I knew for sure he would not be a manager who would want to play the long ball and that was a very important factor in my decision.

In the newspapers, I was linked with all sorts of teams in lots of different countries. Bayern Munich were one, Galatasaray another. Then there were Monaco, Feyenoord, and even a team in Japan. But I didn’t talk to any of them and in May 1995 I met up with Glenn in Milan, and I was ready to sign. Chelsea, here I come.

Gullit won the European Cup twice during his time with AC Milan – in 1989 and 1990

I’d never played in English football before, but I knew all about its reputation as a physically demanding league. Back then, wherever you played, players did not always get the same protection from referees they do now either.

So, after the first press conference when I was announced as a Chelsea player, I went away to work hard and get ready.

I was used to being in the spotlight with AC Milan and, when you are in the spotlight, you always have to perform better than the rest. If you don’t, you get criticised. I had been the world player of the year twice, and my attitude was always that I had to do the best I could. I wanted to prove myself again, and lead by example, so I went away to Portugal, rented a house next to a golf course and trained hard every day by running around and around it.

When I came back to Harlington a few weeks later for pre-season training, I was in good shape. The first thing I noticed, though, was the food the Chelsea players were eating. It was not the food to play good football – it was steak and sausages with gravy and chips, all these kind of fried things. You cannot do that.

That was one big difference to Italy, and the other was the style of football. It was too honest in England. I laugh when I think about it now because, yes, there were a lot of big tackles, which is what I’d been warned about, but it wasn’t a problem because you could see them coming from a mile off.

For me, with the experience I had from Serie A, it was easy to deal with because I was expecting it. In Italy they would kick you hard too, but they were a lot cleverer about it. It’s worse that way, believe me, when you don’t expect it.

Of course when I came to England I was a name, and at first some players thought they could target me. A kind of ’welcome to the Premier League’, I guess. The funniest thing ever is when Vinnie Jones tried to do that, when we played Wimbledon.

I knew even before the game that Vinnie wanted to make a name just by killing me. So I was ready for him, I knew it would happen at some point, and it did. At the start of the second half, I received the ball at an angle and I had my back to him, but I could almost hear him coming for me. I just knew.

So, the moment he was slide tackling me, I just lifted myself a little bit off the ground. Yes, I knew he would catch me but, no, it would not be how he wanted to catch me.

So then I rolled over and he got the red card – he had already been booked – and when I got up, I said to him: ”Now Vinnie, now we can play football.” He was swearing non-stop at me and then in the newspapers the next day, he said how I had been squealing like a little piggy and things like that. I just thought ’well, I got you there, I got you there’.

Vinnie Jones challenging Gullit during a muddy FA Cup sixth-round replay at Selhurst Park, in March 1996

The funny thing was that we became friends soon after that, and we had a laugh about that moment. But that’s an example of how some things that were supposed to be a barrier for some foreign players coming to the Premier League, were not a problem for me. I had learned a lot in Italy, and it gave me an advantage in England in lots of ways, even if the original plan for where I would play did not quite work out.

It wasn’t Glenn who asked me to play sweeper for Chelsea at first – it was me who told him that, if I joined, I wanted to play there, not as an an attacking midfielder like I was in Italy. I’d started out at the back at the beginning of my career, and it was a position I loved.

But the thing was, I was too much of a footballer to play in that position in the Premier League, the way it was then anyway. When a long ball came into the penalty area, I would take it down on my chest and then look to play from there. Glenn said: ”Rudi, no, no, no. I understand what you’re trying to do, but you put my defenders in difficulty like that.”

Nowadays it would work – look at how many Premier League teams try to play out from defence. Back then they were used to always heading or clearing the ball away as far as possible, and I wanted to pass it around to them at the back. They did not want that pass, so Glenn said no, and asked me to change position to do it further forward instead.

I don’t remember the game where that change was made but I do remember one of my team-mates, Gavin Peacock coming to me when I was in midfield and saying: ”Rudi, how come you’re always free?” I couldn’t explain it to him, because it was just experience – you just learn how the ball comes out of certain situations, and that you will have space if you stay in a certain place. In England, there was more of that space than there was in Serie A.

Off the pitch, I felt so much more freedom too. In Italy everything was so intense, the whole time. It was difficult for me to go out because there were so many reporters following me, especially in Milan, but here no-one was chasing me, and no-one wanted anything from me. I could breathe again.

At Milan and Sampdoria, I was used to going into a training camp before every single game. Can you imagine? Now we had only one session most days and we even got Sundays off. I could meet people, and go to places. I had a social life.

Gullit played as sweeper, midfielder and attacker during Chelsea’s 1995-96 season

I was staying in a hotel at first – I don’t even know where it was but it was near the airport, not in the city – and I remember just deciding to drive into the middle of London. It was hard because the cars were on the wrong side of the street, and it was very busy. But when I drove into Piccadilly Circus, I just said to myself ’this is the place for me’, and I was right.

There was another way English football was different from Italy, and in a good way – the crowd, and the attitude in the stands. I felt a different bond with them, and not just the Chelsea supporters. In the Premier League, the fans appreciated what you were doing more – if you did something special on the pitch that they loved, people went crazy. In Italy, they were enthusiastic, sure, and the stadiums were full too, but they got used to seeing those kind of things from so many players they never reacted in the same way.

I hit it off with the Chelsea fans straight away. I remember the dreadlock wigs they wore for my first games. Their supporters were fantastic, always, even when I left, and they still are now. I loved it. I loved the way they were with me and I will always treasure that.

It didn’t take long for me to make friends with the Chelsea players either. I always called them my ’lovely boys’, right from the start. Why ’lovely boys’? Well, I was always crazy about the English TV show ’It Ain’t Half Hot, Mum’ and Windsor Davies played a sergeant major who used that as a term for his men.

I think when I joined, the Chelsea players were surprised that I loved the English sense of humour – I was meant to be Mr Cool, right? – but I had grown up watching all these programmes on Dutch TV in the 1970s. So, in the locker room I was talking about Frank Spencer, ’Fawlty Towers’, ’Are You Being Served’ and ’George and Mildred’. I loved them all.

That helped me fit in. In the Dutch locker room, everyone thinks he knows best and says so. In Italy, it was the same but they were afraid to tell the manager. In England, at that time, everyone wanted to have a laugh.

That wasn’t the only reason I got on with my new team-mates, though. That happened because I wanted to adapt. That part of football has not changed, even now – when you move to a new club or a new country, you need to understand the language first, and then if you spend time with people you will understand each other after a while.

So at Chelsea, I went out with them all, to restaurants and concerts, and I played golf with them as well, lots of golf. I was actually doing that when my Chelsea story ended too. Just as I had done in Italy, I learned a lot from my time in England. Most of those experiences were positive, but that one definitely wasn’t.

I had become player-manager a year after I came to the club, when Glenn Hoddle left to become England manager in 1996. I signed Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli, Roberto di Matteo and Frank Leboeuf. We won the FA Cup in 1997 and, in February 1998 we were second in the Premier League, in the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup and I was in negotiations to sign Jaap Stam from PSV Eindhoven and Brian Laudrup from Rangers.

The day before I was sacked, I was playing golf with one of my coaches, Gwyn Williams, and a couple of the players, Franco [Zola] and Kevin Hitchcock. I was trying to contact Laudrup during our round but I couldn’t get hold of him, which was weird.

It turns out Gwyn, who was one of my closest friends and who had helped me a lot, knew exactly what was going on and that they were going to fire me. He was just playing golf with me to keep me away, to make sure I didn’t go to any of the places where Laudrup was.

Being sacked was a horrible experience, and there was no reason to do what they did. They made out it was over my contract demands but that was rubbish because there had not been any negotiations. They were going to do it anyway. The worst thing was what Gwyn did to me, though – I couldn’t understand doing that to someone when you spend every day with each other. He didn’t even have to say anything specific, he could have just told me to watch out because something was going on.

That was the worst thing anyone had ever done to me, in my career or in my life. That was the biggest disappointment, that someone could do that to me, and I can’t forgive him for that, I really can’t.

Everything else, though, I have put behind me. Am I still angry about being sacked? No way. I swallowed that a long time ago and moved on. Am I glad I came to England? Yes, of course.

It made me a better person and, even with what happened next, when I was manager at Newcastle, I would still say the same thing too. When I was here, I felt that living in in England enriched my experiences in life, and enhanced my ideas about football. I still feel the same way.

Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup in 1997

My favourite moment has to be winning the FA Cup. Winning the European Cup for the first time with AC Milan was incredible, but that equalled it, honestly. I was a new manager, and Chelsea were a new club, in terms of winning trophies. I didn’t expect it but all of a sudden it clicked, and it was an amazing time.

I am very proud I was there at the start for Chelsea, and to see what the Premier League has become too. Both have moved on so much, they are unrecognisable. But they had to start somewhere.

When I came it was as part of a new direction for English football and maybe we are at a similar time now because of the coronavirus pandemic. This should be a wake-up call and all the clubs have to think about managing themselves in different ways now.

The problem in England, for me, is that there are players here who earn way too much money, who are nowhere near good enough to do that. If the big stars earn the big money, that is OK. But I see players who are not even close.

Money changed the Premier League in lots of good ways but, if this blip in the competition happens again, then a lot of clubs are going to be bankrupt if they continue doing what they are doing now, and spending the amount they do. They have to be careful, and they may have to change their model again.

  • Brendan Rodgers stands alongside Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell

Rodgers and Chilwell have discussed his future (Picture: Getty)

Ben Chilwell has discussed his future with Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers and told him he would be keen on sealing a transfer to Chelsea, reports claim.

The left-back has grown in stature under Rodgers during his time at the King Power Stadium and has been heavily linked with an £85million move to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City have also been reportedly interested in signing him in the past and Leicester are now braced to lose him this summer.

According to The Transfer Window Podcast, there is concrete interest from Chelsea, which has led to Chilwell and Rodgers discussing the left-back’s future.

In those discussions, Chilwell explained his ambitions to his manager and confessed he would be keen on joining Chelsea.

Chilwell is an admirer of former England and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, who became the best left-back in the world during his days in west London.

Cole, in return, believes Chilwell will become an elite player.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen the left-back position and is likely to offload Marcos Alonso.

Alonso will turn 30 this year and Lampard wants an upgrade on him – viewing Chilwell as the ideal fit.

In the meantime, Chelsea and Leicester are among the clubs battling it out for a top-four spot.

Chilwell is confident his side will secure a place in the Champions League, while he hopes to win the FA Cup this season.

He told The Telegraph: ‘Our squad has come back in top condition and the best I’ve seen in all the pre-seasons I’ve had at Leicester. We can’t wait to get going again.

‘We’re desperate to finish in that top four and we all want Champions League football back.

‘The FA Cup is also massive for us, if we beat Chelsea we’re in the semi-finals and that’s very much in our minds at the moment as well.

‘At the beginning of the season one of our aims was to reach a cup final and we got so close with the Carabao Cup [losing to Villa in the semi]. We’re buzzing about getting back out there.’

  • Chelsea boss Frank Lampard reportedly approved an offer for Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser in January but the club opted not to submit a bid.

The talented winger is out of contract at the end of the season and will be free to sign for another club.

Bournemouth are keen to extend his stay but Fraser looks ready to test himself at a bigger club.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea boss Lampard was keen to offer him a way out in January.

Lampard approved an offer but when it came to making their move the Stamford Bridge hierarchy opted against making one.

Chelsea’s dithering could be Tottenham and Arsenal’s gain this summer with Fraser likely to become available.

Both clubs are said to have been tracking his progress as they look for cheap additions to their squad for next season.

However, The Athletic claim both north London sides aren’t currently viewing him as a priority.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have bigger targets to chase and are concerned he may struggle to make the step up to a top-six side.

  • Emerson Palmieri in action for Chelsea

Emerson is keen on a return to Italy (Picture: Getty)

Chelsea have rejected Juventus’ offer to swap Emerson Palmieri for Mattia De Sciglio, according to reports in Italy.

Juventus have been chasing Emerson for several months and the full-back has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea under Frank Lampard.

Chelsea are thought to be open to the idea of Emerson leaving in the next transfer window and Corriere dello Sport claim the Blues have already turned down one proposal from Juventus.

The Serie A giants are trying to drive down the asking price for Emerson after Chelsea slapped a £37million price tag on the defender.

Juventus are not willing to offer more than £27m for Emerson, who has two years left on his contract at Chelsea.

The Serie A giants were prepared to let De Sciglio join Chelsea in exchange for Emerson, but the London club have their eye on another one of Juventus’ players.

Alex Sandro has long been linked with a transfer to the Premier League, with Manchester United previously credited with an interest in the Brazil international.

Chelsea want Sandro instead of De Sciglio (Picture: Getty)

The 29-year-old is Juventus’ No.1. left-back and is valued between £36m and £45m by his club.

Chelsea are prepared to return to talks if Juventus offer up Sandro, with Lampard eager to secure a new left-back.

Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell is Lampard’s top target in that position, but the Englishman’s big price tag may force Chelsea to look elsewhere.

Ajax star Nicolas Tagliafico has also been mentioned as a possible target, but Sandro is the more experienced of the trio of full-backs.

Chelsea are expected to provide funds for Lampard to secure at least one big signing this summer amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Clubs are have been hit by financial issues during the shutdown, but Chelsea are on track to return to action against Aston Villa at the end of June.

  • Chelsea want to raise the amount of substitutes allowed per match to nine.

The Blues could be concerned over how their playing squad will cope with being thrown back into action after three months without action due to the enforced break.

Although FIFA regulations have already raised the number of changes from three to five, club chiefs are hoping to convince their rival Premier League sides of their proposal during a meeting on Thursday.

The additional substitutes have been used successfully in the Bundesliga which has restarted smoothly in recent weeks, but there has been a slight increase in the about of injuries players are suffering per match.

Goal have now reported that Chelsea want to be allowed to change the vast majority of their starting XI in their remaining nine fixtures, which could have been influence by how their players have been performing in training.

Frank Lampard’s squad returned to Cobham two weeks ago and have recently stepped up the intensity of their training sessions in a bid to get them up to speed for their fixtures in mid June.

Chelsea are currently on course to achieve their target of a top four finish but are only three points above fifth-place Manchester United who enjoyed a run of good form before the break.

Although N’Golo Kante looks set to sit out the rest of the season by choice, Christian Pulisic, Mateo Kovacic and Tammy Abraham are now back to full fitness and Callum Hudson-Odoi is also back in training.

Lampard said in May that he wanted his players to have a month of full training before their are to step back into Premier League action, and their start date of June 19-21 looks to just about cover his target.

“It was really important, firstly, for me and the staff, to make sure everyone was mentally alright with this sudden change which means you can’t leave the house,” said Lampard.

“Once we got our head around that, we’d try and keep in contact with the players all the time but we’ve given them daily plans. They train in the hour we were given in lockdown and you can be outside, we gave them running plans.

  • Chelsea are reportedly pushing for an increase to nine substitutes for the remainder of the suspended Premier League season.

Top-flight action in England is set to return on June 17, marking 100 days since football was put on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Project Restart getting approval last week.

According to various reports, Chelsea are pushing for an increase in size of the matchday squad from 18 players to 20 and, therefore, allowing two further players to sit on the bench and increase the options available to managers.

The Premier League were already set to discuss allowing the introduction of five players into a game, up from the usual three, and will also vote on Chelsea’s proposal.

Chelsea are concerned by the long pause in competitive football, along with fitting nine games and up to three further FA Cup games into a seven-week schedule.

Frank Lampard’s side are in the midst of a fierce battle to finish in the top four, with Manchester United sitting three points further back.

  • Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze is on Chelsea's transfer shortlist

Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze is on Chelsea’s transfer shortlist (Getty Images)

Chelsea are considering Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze as an alternative to Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

Frank Lampard’s side are in the race to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer, although United are increasingly confident that the 20-year-old will decide to join Old Trafford.

Chelsea are exploring alternative options to Sancho and according to Goal, Chukwueze is on their shortlist.

The report claims that Chelsea remain interested in Wilfried Zaha but are not willing to meet Crystal Palace’s £80 million asking price.

Chukwueze is considered as one of the brightest young talents in La Liga, scoring four goals and registering four assists in 30 appearances for Villarreal this season.

Liverpool have also been heavily linked with a move for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze

The 21-year-old has already been capped 13 times by Nigeria and played a key role in helping his nation win the Under-17 World Cup in 2015.

Chelsea are likely to face competition for Chukwueze as reports in France claim that Liverpool had a €35m (£29.6m) bid for the Nigerian winger rejected in January.

Chukwueze’s current deal with Villarreal expires in 2023, while he has a €65m (£58m) release clause in his contract.

Speaking in February, former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, who plays alongside Chukwueze at Villarreal, claimed the Gunners were also interested in the winger.

Asked if he had fielded calls from English clubs about his teammates, Cazorla told Marca: ‘Yes, friends from Arsenal especially.

‘They ask me about them and think they can make the jump to the Premier League tomorrow.

‘It’s good that great teams are interested in young players from Villarreal, but for the moment I tell them to leave them alone here.

‘They still have to take steps forward. They both have a great personality, and their feet are on the ground.’

  • Barcelona misfit Philippe Coutinho wants to return to the Premier League, his agent has confirmed.

Coutinho has struggled to replicate the form which convinced Barca to part with £140m in the two years since his Liverpool exit.

A season on loan at Bayern Munich has ended with injury and a failure to land a permanent switch and now, with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, linked, his preference has been confirmed.

”He has a desire to come back to the Premier League at some point,” Kia Joorabchian told Sky Sports.

”It may not happen this year, it may happen this year – we don’t know. We have not discussed anything for now.”

Reports in Spain over the weekend claimed Barcelona were holding out for a £9m fee to take Coutinho on loan, a number Joorabchian has denied.

”I have never heard those figures,” the agent explained. ”None of these numbers have ever been discussed.”

The Chelsea midfielder has improved under Frank Lampard this season having endured a difficult first season in England last year.

But Juventus are now hot on his tail, with Sarri determined to land the Italy international for the third time in his career.

Previously they’d planned to offer Chelsea the chance to sign Miralem Pjanic, who has been deemed surplus to requirements over in Turin.

The Bosnia international turned down a move to the Premier League, though, with Barcelona instead his preferred destination.

And Catalan newspaper Sport say Juventus have offered Chelsea a pick of three players instead as they look to get a deal done.

It’s claimed that Douglas Costa is one of them.

  • Edu and Raul Sanllehi drove Arsenal's move to sign David Luiz from Chelsea last summer

Edu and Raul Sanllehi drove Arsenal’s move to sign David Luiz from Chelsea last summer (Picture: Getty)

Cash-strapped Arsenal spent an eye-watering sum of money to sign David Luiz from Chelsea last summer.

The 33-year-old penned a one-year deal after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Frank Lampard and moved to the Blues’ London rivals on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal are currently weighing up whether or not to offer their most senior player a 12-month extension and although Mikel Arteta is keen to retain Luiz’s services, the Brazil international’s future remains in the balance.

The Arsenal hierarchy are still to make significant breakthroughs in negotiations over new deals for captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and this season’s breakthrough star Bukayo Saka.

It will represent an enormous source of frustration for Arsenal fans, therefore, to learn that, according to The Athletic, the total cost of Luiz’s move from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium could ultimately represent an eye-watering £24million.

David Luiz's form has improved drastically under the management of Mikel Arteta

According to the report, the total sum breaks down as £8m on the initial transfer fee, £6m to intermediaries and £10m on Luiz’s annual salary.

Arsenal dispensed with their former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat 18 months ago, the man who played a key role in bringing the likes of Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Aubameyang to the club, in favour of handing head of football Raul Sanllehi more of a say in the club’s transfer policy.

The former Barcelona chief was joined in the summer by new technical director Edu and the pair, who share a close relationship with Luiz’s agent Kia Joorabchian, drove the deal to sign a replacement for Laurent Koscielny.

Arsenal were placed in a difficult position when their former captain left in acrimonious circumstances but, despite his recent improvement under Arteta, Luiz has been far from an unqualified success.

Luiz has spoken effusively and extensively about Arteta in glowing terms since his appointment, but has made no secret of his desire to return to Benfica, the club at which he launched his European career.

He told Record earlier this week: ‘I have already spoken with (Luiz Filipe) Vieira. It will happen if the President permits it and fans want me back.

‘To be able to wear that jersey again and enter the stadium is worth more than many trophies. Benfica doesn’t deserve me to come back without helping.’

  • David Luiz says he has held talks with Benfica boss Luiz Filipe Vieira over an emotional return to the Portuguese giants this summer.

The Brazilian defender is set to see his stay at Arsenal cut short after less than 12 months at the Emirates Stadium, with the Gunners looking likely to show the 33-year-old the door when the current season finally ends.

Luiz signed a one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months when he joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea in an £8million deal last summer.

He has been a regular throughout the current campaign, with the now-departed manager who signed him, Unai Emery, interim boss Freddie Ljungberg and current head coach Mikel Arteta all leaning heavily on his experience in defence.

Luiz has played 32 times for the Gunners in all competitions, scoring twice, but with Arteta seeking to trim the wage bill and lower the average age of the squad, he now seems likely to be allowed to depart this summer.

The centre-back spent four years with Benfica, his first European club, before a January 2011 switch to Chelsea, and he says he is now targeting a return to Lisbon.

”I have already spoken with Vieira. It will happen if the President permits it and fans want me back,” he is reported as saying by Portuguese outlet Record, who feature Luiz on the front cover of Saturday’s edition.

”‘To be able to wear that jersey again and enter the stadium is worth more than many trophies.

Luiz’s exit is set to be part of a defensive overhaul at the Emirates Stadium, with Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos all deemed expendable by Arteta.

Pablo Mari’s loan deal from Flamengo is likely to be turned into a permanent switch this summer, while William Saliba has returned from his loan deal at Saint-Etienne after the Ligue 1 season was curtailed.

He has already brought in Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, who will join up with his new team-mates from July 1.

Man fick knappt gå utanför dörren längre.

  • Jorginho interest

Two European giants are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

That’s according to the player’s agent Joao Santos, who says both have made contact to discuss the Italy midfielder’s availability.

Juventus have frequently been linked with the former Napoli star with Maurizio Sarri at the helm, but Santos stressed that the two interested parties are from outside of Serie A.

“If you ask me if Sarri likes Jorginho, I’d say ‘yes’ due to their history,” Santos told Radio Musica Television. “I can’t say anything about the transfer market as I’m not in touch with anyone right now.

“Jorginho still has three years left on his contract and is doing well at Chelsea, but if a big enough offer comes in then a deal could go through. In this sense, two top European clubs, not Italian ones, contacted me.”

  • Chelsea have decided against pursuing Achraf Hakimi in the transfer market because of how impressed the club has been with Reece James.

The Morocco international has spent the past two seasons on loan to Borussia Dortmund from Real Madrid.

At the age of 21, Los Blancos see a big future in the right-back but he found himself behind Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola in the pecking order.

But during his time in the Bundesliga, Hakimi has probably overtaken the two in terms of talent.

The youngster has been a force in Dortmund’s starting XI, completing a technical tactical system that sees the wing-backs bomb forward.

And this season, Hakimi has blossomed – netting eight and assisting 10 in all competitions.

Achraf Hakimi has been in fine form this season

It had led to interest in his services from the likes of Chelsea, who were looking for successors to Cesar Azpilicueta last summer.

However, according to the Athletic, Frank Lampard has been so impressed by James that they have canned plans for the Real star.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Stamford Bridge, as has many youngsters under Lampard’s watch.

He has played 26 matches in all competitions and has signed a long-term contract this campaign.

Despite suffering a broken ankle last summer that ruled him out for the start of the season, James has flourished.

N’Golo Kante maintains the full support of his Chelsea teammates after he was excused from training last week.

The France international took part in last Tuesday’s session at the club’s Cobham base, but was given a leave of absence thereafter and has been told he would be allowed to sit out the remainder of the season should he continue to feel uncomfortable amid the ongoing conronavirus crisis.

Kante’s brother died of a heart attack shortly before the 2018 World Cup, while the 29-year-old, himself, had frightened colleagues weeks earlier when he fainted in training and momentarily passed out.

Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who last week signed a one-year contract extension, revealed Kante had tested negative for Covid-19 but in a Zoom call with his colleagues the former Leicester midfielder admitted he felt too scared to return to training.

The 38-year-old told TNT Sports in an Instagram Live: ‘It’s very understandable. He tested negative for Covid-19 but he had a bad time of it during quarantine with symptoms of the virus that gave him that fear.

‘We respect him and we’ll wait until he feels comfortable because the truth is that to do what we’re doing you have to feel okay and feel confidence and after we start again, we have to all go forward together.

‘N’Golo is a very humble and hard-working person who is always smiling and he must have his reasons to lift up his hand and say what he’s said.

‘We did a lot of Zoom meetings with Frank Lampard and the other players and he said he didn’t feel safe going back to training because of the way he had felt over the last few weeks.

‘We know he’s someone who loves training and running and is incapable of lying about something like this. We support him and we respect him.’
