Declan Rice could be central to a new formation at Chelsea next season.

Frank Lampard is set to attempt a Premier League title charge after a big summer spend, and he could look to repeat the success of his move from West Ham in an approach for the England international.

The 21-year-old has failed to guide the Hammers away from the relegation zone after the enforced break and they remain outside of the bottom three only on goal difference with seven games remaining.

The former Blues trainee might be forced to leave the London Stadium in order to retain his status as a top flight player, and he could cost just £45m.

The Sun have reported that not only is Rice a target of Chelsea, but that he is central to a change in formation.

They report that Lampard sees the former Republic of Ireland international as the perfect man to lead a three-man defence, a position that he has recently returned to from midfield.

He said earlier this month: “I’ve felt comfortable.

”As has been said before, it’s a position I’ve played before and when the gaffer pulled me aside during the week and said he wants me to play there, there were no questions asked – I’d go back there and do a job for the team.”

In addition to Rice, Chelsea have been tipped to make a move for Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell as a replacement for Marcos Alonso.

Despite the Foxes looking likely to secure Champions League qualification of their own, the 23-year-old might be tempted to link up with England hero Lampard.

He could slot into the left-hand side of a five man defence that changes into a three when they are in possession, with Reece James on the opposite side.

N’Golo Kante could link up with Mason Mount in midfield as Jorginho is tracked by Juventus, with Tammy Abraham joined by new boys Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech up front.

Lampard said when asked about Abraham’s position after Werner’s more: “I have spoken to Tammy before about competition.

“I don’t have to address every player if another one comes in. It’s how it has been in the Abramovich era, but Tammy has been very good this season.”
