Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller insists the club have not given up hope of keeping Kai Havertz after Chelsea opened talks to sign the midfielder.

Acording to reports on Tuesday, Frank Lampard’s side have begun negotiations with Leverkusen over a potential deal for the 20-year-old this summer.

Havertz is widely regarded as one of the best young midfielders in Europe and has attracted strong interest from both Manchester United and Liverpool, as well as Real Madrid and Barcelona.

However, when asked about Havertz’s situation on Tuesday evening, Voller claimed that Leverkusen are ‘in a good position’ and predicted that speculation will increase ‘if he plays like this now’.

‘We haven’t given up hope that he’ll stay with us,’ Voller told ARD.

‘We try to give him every possibility that he can call up his qualities.

‘He did an outstanding job in the second half of the season.’

Havertz was left out of Leverkusen’s squad on Tuesday night as they sealed a 3-0 win over FC Saarbruecken in the DFB Pokal.

The midfielder has been a pivotal part of Leverkusen’s season with 15 goals and eight assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

Leverkusen have been holding out for a €100 million (£89m) transfer fee for Havertz.
