Chelsea are considering selling goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga at the end of the season and replacing him with Burnley’s Nick Pope.

The Spanish goalkeeper has failed to live up to his £71m price tag with a string of underwhelming performances this season under the management of Frank Lampard.

Kepa arrived at Stamford Bridge from Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2018 for the huge transfer fee and after a solid first season has been below-par this campaign.

Bleacher Report suggest that the Blues are now looking to cut their losses on the Spain international and reinvest in a new number one.

Chelsea are at the preliminary stages of finding a replacement, with scouts compiling reports on possible signings, but Pope is a name that has come up in early discussions.

The England international is reasonably inexperienced in the Premier League, having made just 58 appearances for Burnley in the top flight, but did enough to make the 2018 World Cup squad, although has not had a brilliant season so far with the Clarets struggling.

The 27-year-old would be a significantly cheaper option than Kepa and Chelsea may see him as a comparable option which allows them to save cash to reinvest elsewhere in the squad.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was critical of Kepa after the 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Tuesday night, contributing little in his team’s disappointing result against 10 men.

‘I know there’s a focus on him at the minute. I think that’s top-line football,’ said Lampard.

‘With his feet a couple of times today he took too long and nearly gave it away. And sometimes that can change the momentum of a game.

‘So that’s something obviously that he’ll know and has to look at – and we have to look at.

‘And yeah, it’s normal. Any player in a position, particularly goalkeepers, people will look at you and that’s when you stand up and show the mettle that you’ve got.

‘So I think he’s not the only one. We’re in fourth position, which is seen as being pretty good, but I know and we know that there should be another 10 points on the board at least on performance. So all of us need to look at this finer details.’
