Tammy Abraham is confident he will be back in contention to start when Chelsea face Aston Villa in midweek.

The 22-year-old striker has had an outstanding start to the campaign but missed Chelsea’s defeat at home to West Ham this weekend after suffering an injury away at Valencia.

While there were initial fears that Abraham’s injury could be internal after an awkward collision with Ezequiel Garay, it was later confirmed that the forward had merely suffered a bruised hip.

Frank Lampard recalled Olivier Giroud in attack as the Blues were beaten by West Ham at Stamford Bridge, but it appears Abraham could return to the side on Wednesday night.

Speaking to The Athletic after Chelsea’s defeat on Saturday, Abraham said he would ‘hopefully’ be fit to face Villa with a telling smile and a nod.

The young England international has scored 11 goals in 20 appearances for Chelsea this season and has rapidly established himself as one of Lampard’s key players.

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s to West Ham, Lampard called for his players bounce back and prove their ‘character’ versus Villa.

‘I still believe in the squad,’ the Chelsea manager said.

‘But when you look at it today, we made some changes and we didn’t perform as well as we wanted to.

‘We have shown some great stuff this season. I haven’t had to sit here many times and say: “We were below par today.” Hardly at all. Today was one of those days.

‘I don’t think it’s any time for harsh reactions and judgments across individuals or the team.

‘It’s time for a look at a bit of character to see how our reaction is for Aston Villa.’
