Werner is backed to have a big impact at Chelsea

Former RB Leipzig assistant coach Jesse Marsch says Chelsea new boy Timo Werner’s ‘special’ ability is managing to avoid injury despite being lightning quick.

The Blues completed a £53 million deal to bring the Germany international to Stamford Bridge after yet another impressive season in the Bundesliga.

In his final ever appearance for Leipzig, Werner netted a brace to become their all-time leading scorer on 95 goals over his four-year spell at the club.

And as well as being a natural goalscorer, the 24-year-old has managed to avoid major injury, which Marsch hopes will continue when he arrives at Chelsea.

‘He will work against the ball, he will defend, he’ll work for the team, and the other thing that’s so special about Timo is that for a guy who sprints so much in a game, he’s always healthy,’ Marsch told Bleacher Report’s Football Ranks podcast.

‘That’s unusual, those sprinters that are so aggressive, they pick up a lot of soft-tissue muscle injuries. Timo has been incredibly fit and hopefully, he can stay that way.’

Lampard will have to fit plenty of attacking talent into one team

Lampard will have plenty of attacking options next season (Picture: Getty Images)

After the signings of Werner and Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech, Frank Lampard will have a tough job deciding on how to set up him side next season.

The German forward can play in any of the three positions across the front three, but Marsch believes he is particularly effective when coming inside from the left.

‘He likes to drift to the left and then come in with his right,’ he added.

‘He can drag the ball [out wide] and cross it or come across the goal as well.

‘He’s also good at finishing crosses from the right side when he’s attacking in the box, but he’s also good in the middle and he’s good on the right, too.

‘I think if you’re playing with two strikers, which is what we did often at Leipzig, we gave them freedom to move to the left.

‘We built that in tactically so he could find ways to be on the move but dangerous, but he could play as a second striker, he could play on the right, he can play in a front three, he can play any of those positions.’

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz is keen to link up with Timo Werner at Chelsea

Kai Havertz is attracted by the prospect of playing alongside Timo Werner at Chelsea, according to reports.

Frank Lampard’s side are leading the race to sign Havertz this summer and are already in talks with the midfielder’s representatives.

Chelsea have reportedly indicated that they are willing to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s €100 million (£89.8m) asking price but are keen to pay in installments.

Havertz, meanwhile, is looking to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer and 21-year-old is open to joining Chelsea on the condition that they secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Havertz is also keen on the idea of joining Chelsea because he would link up with Werner, who has already completed his £47.5m move to Stamford Bridge.

Havertz has a good relationship with Werner following their time together with Germany’s national team and the pair could become an integral part of Chelsea’s bid to win the Premier League title next season.

Romano also claims that during talks with Havertz’s representatives, Chelsea were informed that the midfielder is also impressed by the club’s project and Frank Lampard’s plans.

Leverkusen, however, are expected to stand firm over their €100m (£89.8m) valuation.

Speaking last week before the DFB Pokal final defeat to Bayern Munich, Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller claimed the 21-year-old is the best player in the the club’s history.

‘We’ve had many good players through the history of the club at Bayer Leverkusen, but Kai Havertz is the best of them all,’ Voller said.

Liverpool have also expressed an interest in Havertz but have been put off by the midfielder’s high asking price.

Bayern Munich have also pulled out of the running to sign the midfielder this summer after securing a £55m deal to sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City last week.

Real Madrid are a similar position to Bayern Munich as they are keen on Havertz but must offload players before they look to bolster their squad with new signings.

Chelsea are the favourites to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, but are not willing to pay the £90m asking price.

Havertz wants to leave Leverkusen and the German club are prepared to allow his exit. The 21-year-old has only two years remaining on his contract and Leverkusen have failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Bundesliga side value Havertz at €100m (£90m) but his representatives are hopeful a deal can be structured with bonus payments and add-ons that would satisfy all parties.

Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton says Bayer Leverkusen’s £90m asking price for Kai Havertz is too much

Chelsea have already shown they are prepared to invest in the transfer market this summer by signing Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech for next season.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich is willing to bankroll transfers this summer as he believes there is more value in the market, with prices dropping because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea have already singed Havertz's Germany team-mate Timo Werner from RB Leipzig ahead of next season Chelsea have already singed Havertz's Germany team-mate Timo Werner from RB Leipzig ahead of next season

Chelsea’s rivals may also struggle to compete in the market, with the European Club Association estimating European clubs will lose more than £3.5 billion in revenue over the next year because of the pandemic.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich also want Havertz but they are not in a position to pay Leverkusen’s asking price without selling players. Manchester United are also interested but their priority signing this summer is Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

’Havertz would improve any PL team’

Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann…

”A lot of Premier League clubs will be interested in Havertz, he’s a terrific player and there’s not many better around at the moment.

”If you look at Manchester United, it’s very clear they need new personnel going forward, and I think he’d improve pretty much every team. Liverpool are a bit different with the way they set-up and play, but besides that he improves every team.

”Before the break people were talking about three figures, a hundred-odd million, if that’s a price any club is prepared to pay in the summer, I’m not sure, but the likelihood is he will leave Leverkusen and take on another challenge in the summer.”

Moyes: Antonio contract talks at season end

West Ham manager David Moyes has confirmed the club will hold contract talks with Michail Antonio at the end of the season.

Photo: Getty

“We have to find out what league we’re going to be in,” Moyes said, per Sky Sports. “We’ve got a job to do. We’ve not taken our focus for one minute away from the next game. At the end of the season it’s something we’ll start to look at.”

Hasenhuttl remains coy on Walker-Peters future

Sticking with Kyle Walker-Peters, then. Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has certainly been impressed by the defender, but is uncertain whether a permanent deal will be made.

”He took the chance with both hands and showed some good performances, especially on Sunday which was very difficult against this opponent. We had some very good defensive actions and with the ball he had some good moves.

“Yeah he’s in a good way. Must stay hungry and must show up until the end of the season and then we can decide.

“We haven’t decided yet what we do with him, he’s still a player from Tottenham and then we can decide.”

Mourinho: We won’t stop Walker-Peters from going

Jose Mourinho insists Kyle Walker-Peters has a future with Tottenham but says he would not stand in the right-back’s way should he decide to leave.

The Englishman is currently enjoying a positive loan spell with Southampton, where he put in a solid performance in their recent 1-0 win against Manchester City.

”We see a future here, yes,” Mourinho said. ”But we always see a future outside where he can be happy. The reason why he went to Southampton was not because we pushed him to go.

Photo: Getty

”But if his desire is to be playing every time and leaving the club in search of happiness I don’t think we’d stop him.

”He’s a player with a good value in the market but I don’t think we’d stop him doing it.”

Rojo ’likely’ to leave Man Utd this summer

Marcos Rojo is likely to leave Manchester United this summer, according to the players’ agent.

The Argentine was on the periphery of the United squad prior to a January loan move to boyhood club Estudiantes, making just nine appearances.

Photo: Getty

“I couldn’t comment on what Solskjaer thinks but I think it’s obvious,” Johnathan Barnett told Stretty News. ”I think with Rojo, probably [a move] is more than likely somewhere else.”

On whether a permanent move could be to Argentina, Barnett said “I don’t know yet. I’m not sure.”

Keown: Ozil has no future at Arsenal

Martin Keown believes his former club Arsenal must move on Mesut Ozil this summer to ”protect the next generation”

The German remains on the periphery of Arsenal’s squad following Mikel Arteta’s arrival, despite being reinstated into the first-team following the Spaniard’s initial arrival.

Ozil is yet to play a single minute since the restart, and the former Gunners defender believes he no longer has a future at the club.

Photo: Getty

”I think it’s a real shame, because he had a magnificent talent, but if you’re not prepared to work hard out of possession for the team, then you don’t get to play in the new Arsenal at the moment and that’s what Arteta is all about.

”Work ethic comes first and then everything else is a bonus, you play from there. Clearly he’s not seeing enough on the training pitch.”

Havertz wants Chelsea move

Kai Havertz has indicated he wants to join Chelsea this summer, according to ESPN.

Bayern Munich bowed out of the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star last week, leaving the Blues in pole position to sign him in what would be another huge statement of intent from the club.

A latest report now suggests Chelsea are moving forward with the deal having been given the green light from the player who wants to leave Leverkusen this summer.

City jump ahead of Barca in Traore hunt

Manchester City have moved ahead of Barcelona in the race for Wolves winger Adama Traore, according to ESPN.

Wolves still remain in the hunt for a Champions League berth on two fronts, but will demand £80m if Traore does leave.

Bowen and Soucek the blueprint for West Ham deals

David Moyes says January signings Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek can show the club the direction they should take with recruitment in the future.

”But I think that if you get signings that work you can see where you’re going, we’re trying to be a bit more diligent in the ones we bring in. We are trying to have a type we want to bring in. If we continue to bring in players of a similar type we’ll be going in the right direction.”

West Ham plan Antonio talks

David Moyes has said West Ham plan to start contract talks with Michail Antonio at the end of the season.

Antonio has a year left on his current deal.

“We’ve got a job to do. We’ve not taken our focus for one minute away from the next game. At the end of the season it’s something we’ll start to look at.”

Man Utd not after Ake

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has quashed links with Bournemouth centre back Nathan Ake, who he was seen talking to after last week’s 5-2 win.

He said: “I’ve got seven centre backs. I don’t know where that’s come from. We’re fine.”

Solskjaer hails Grealish

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed Manchester United target Jack Grealish.

Grealish is among Solskjaer’s leading targets when the transfer window opens – and will have the chance to enhance his reputation when United travel to Aston Villa on Thursday.

“Grealish scored a fantastic goal. There’s been loads said about him and we need to be aware of him. If he’s off the left, middle or right, he attracts players to him – but there’s not just one player in that Villa team, there are a lot of them.”

Man Utd end Dembele chase

Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Moussa Dembele, according to The Mirror.

The emergence of Mason Greenwood as a first-team asset has also played a role in the decision to move on from Dembele.

Martinez set for Bayern exit

Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez is to leave the club after eight seasons with the German champions, report WAZ.

The 31-year-old has won everything there is to win in a Bayern shirt, including eight Bundesliga titles, five DFB-Pokals and the Champions League back in 2012.

Solskjaer shortlist

Nathan Aké, Tyrone Mings and Alessio Romagnoli are all in the frame for Manchester United this summer, according to ESPN.

Klopp: Liverpool unlikely to recruit

Jurgen Klopp has reiterated that Liverpool are unlikely to be able to dip into the transfer market this summer as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “Are there players out there on the market who could help us as well? Probably, yes. This is the challenge for us, to improve a really good football team.

“This team is how it is but that doesn’t mean we will not strengthen, we don’t want to strengthen.

“If we have to and we have the opportunity and we have the financial resources then it will always happen and we will always try.

“But at the moment it’s really, really a difficult time and this team makes pressure on each other by themselves internally. Training quality is really important and high.

“This is a difficult year for all football clubs in the world and I don’t think it’s a time where we talk about transfers like the rest around us did not happen.”

Barca ’will sack Setien to keep Messi’

Barcelona could be set to sack Quique Setien and bring in Xavi to ensure Lionel Messi stays at the club, according to The Express.

Kai Havertz to Chelsea ON

Kai Havertz to Chelsea is on this summer with the player set to ask for a mover in the coming weeks.

Bild report Havertz will ask Bayer Leverkusen to sell him this summer.

It is a similar situation for Real Madrid, meaning Chelsea’s main rivals for his signature are out of the running.

Inter Milan are interested in David Alaba but the player does not want to join Antonio Conte’s side, according to Bild.

Griezmann staying at Barca

Barcelona have assured Antoine Griezmann that he will stay at the club, according to L’Equipe.

When does the 2020 summer transfer window open?

The Premier League’s chief executive, Richard Masters, has confirmed that the window is not set to open until the end of the season.

The campaign is currently scheduled to finish on Sunday July 26th, though the FA Cup Final will be held on August 1.

Therefore, August 2 seems a likely date for the window to open, though Masters admitted there is not yet a plan for how long it would go on for – especially with no dates yet confirmed for the 2020/21 season.

A summer transfer window usually lasts at least 12 weeks. Recent reports suggest Fifa will allow leagues to open their windows up to four weeks before the culmination of the season.

Players can be officially registered with their new clubs when the Fifa international window opens on July 1 – such as Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner with Chelsea – though Fifa guidelines suggest players joining in July will not be able to play for their new clubs during the current 2019-20 season.

From January 1 onwards, Premier League players with six months left on their contract have been able to negotiate and agree pre-contract deals with foreign clubs.

Some players have signed short-term deals with their clubs to finish the current season, but there is no obligation for players to do so. However, they will not be able to play for a new team this season even if they become a free agent due to Fifa regulations on registrations.

Åtminstone tillfälligt, då Leicester möter Arsenal senare under tisdagskvällen.

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen

Chelsea are leading the race to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen (AP)

Kai Havertz is keen on joining Chelsea this summer and does not want to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season, according to reports.

The 21-year-old is one of Europe’s most in-demand young midfielders as he has attracted interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Having already secured deals for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner and Ajax’s attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea are keen to strengthen even more and have positioned themselves in the race for Havertz.

Reports in Germany this week have claimed that Havertz’s representatives are fully aware of Chelsea’s interest in completing a deal this summer.

And according to The Guardian, a move to Chelsea ‘appeals’ to Havertz, with Frank Lampard’s side ‘leading the race’ to sign the midfielder from Leverkusen.

The report also claims that the Germany international is looking to leave Leverkusen this summer, while Bayern are not prepared to spend big on the midfielder this year.

Bayer Leverkusen are demanding 89.5m for Kai Havertz

Bayer Leverkusen are demanding £89.5m for Kai Havertz (Getty Images)

Leverkusen have initially demanded over €100 million (£89.5m) for Havertz, while reports claim that Chelsea are £20m apart in their valuation of the midfielder.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen’s former CEO, Reiner Calmund, believes the German club will stick to their €100m (£89.5m) asking price for Havertz.

‘Havertz scores goals with his left foot, right foot and his head. That is an exceptional quality to have. He is also versatile, fit, technically strong and fast. He is an exceptional talent,’ Calmund told Goal.

‘The two Bayer managing directors Fernando Carro and Rudi Voller, like the supervisory board chairman Werner Wenning, have committed themselves to €100m as the basis for negotiations. The three Bayer bosses will not move significantly away from this amount.

‘At Leverkusen we had three absolutely exceptional midfielders in Michael Ballack, Emerson and Bernd Schuster, whose careers I have followed intensively from the start.

‘Ballack was the most dangerous, Emerson shone with his versatility and Schuster was great from a strategic point of view. If you compare these guys to Havertz when they were 21 years old, Kai is superior to all three.

‘Voller also shares this view that none of the three at this age had such skill. He explained to me that Havertz would also be the more exceptional player in the medium term.’

Chelsea are reportedly set to offer Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz a five-year deal as they continue to revamp the squad this summer.

Blues boss Frank Lampard has already added striker Timo Werner and Ajax forward Hakim Ziyech to his ranks for a combined initial fee of £83.5m.

Now, they are looking to further strengthen their squad with the addition of 21-year-old playmaker Havertz, who has been a regular in Leverkusen’s line up since bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old and is said to be coveted by most of Europe.

According to a report from Italian transfer expert Nicolo Schira, the Blues are already in talks with his agent and are set to offer him a five-year-deal worth €8m-a-year (£7.2m).

Chelsea are said to be pursuing Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz

Marina Granovskaia is said to be spearheading negotiations, with Chelsea willing to offload six players in order to finance the move.

Bayer Leverkusen are determined to get top dollar for their prize asset, with the club’s former CEO Reiner Calmund claiming they will demand a fee of around €100m (£90.3m) for the midfielder.

Speaking to Goal, Calmund said: ”Havertz scores goals with his left foot, right foot and his head. That is an exceptional quality to have. He is also versatile, fit, technically strong and fast. He is an exceptional talent.

According to The Times, manager Frank Lampard is particularly keen on the Hammers midfielder as he believes he has the attributes of a high-class centre-back.

In fact, Lampard believes he can become as successful as Chelsea great Terry in defence, even though he plays in midfield for West Ham.

JUST IN: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta discusses Mesut Ozil’s future after first-team snub

Chelsea are set to press ahead with a move for Kai Havertz, after his season with Bayer Leverkusen ended in defeat in the German Cup Final — and Frank Lampard is considering a move for West Ham’s Declan Rice to help improve his defence.

Lampard has identified Havertz as one of his top targets and Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21-year-old has been given a boost after Bayern Munich pulled out of the race to sign him.

Real Madrid have shown an interest in Havertz, but Lampard hopes to strengthen his attacking options further, following the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Havertz, who is valued at £70million, is expected to leave Leverkusen after they missed out on Champions League qualification. He is nowset for talks with the club over his future, after they lost 4-2 to Bayern in Saturday’s final.

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Rice, after identifying the West Ham youngster as a possible centre-back option, as Lampard bids to shore up his defence.

Rice is a boyhood Chelsea fan and spent seven years in their academy before being released when he was 14. He has predominantly played as a midfielder, but played as a centre-back coming through the ranks at West Ham.

The Hammers, like most clubs facing the harsh financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, may sell players to raise cash this summer, but they do not want to lose Rice. David Moyes has said he sees the 21-year-old, contracted until 2024, as a key part of his plans.

Chelsea also want to sign Leicester’s England left-back Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea have made an explosive start to the summer transfer window by adding Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to their ranks.

An initial €40million (£36m) deal was agreed with Ajax for Ziyech in February while Werner’s arrival from RB Leipzig was confirmed after triggering his release clause last month.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is willing to back Frank Lampard after an encouraging maiden campaign in the Stamford Bridge dugout but the club want to clear deadwood to make room for Havertz, who is valued at £90m by Leverkusen.

Express Sport understands Marcos Alonso, Michy Batshuayi, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kenedy and Danny Drinkwater are among the players who are likely to be shipped out.

Emerson Palmieri is the sixth man on the list and Inter Milan have opened talks with Chelsea about signing the Italy international.

Ben Chilwell is Chelsea’s first choice recruit in the left-back role this summer, but Frank Lampard and club chiefs have identified two alternatives should they fail to land the Leicester City defender.

Chilwell has an £85million price tag, which could force the Blues to look elsewhere.

Nicolas Tagliafico, the Ajax full-back, and Porto’s Alex Telles are back-up options and would both be considerably cheaper than Chilwell.

One of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri is expected to be sold off this summer.

According to The Guardian, Inter Milan have opened talks with Emerson.

Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, now manager at the San Siro, is keen to add the 25-year-old to his squad.

Inter are ready to bid £18million for his services but Chelsea are holding out for a higher fee for the Italy international, who is under contract until 2022.

Emerson is open to a return to Serie A to give himself the best chance of being Italy’s first-choice left-back at next summer’s European Championship.

He is concerned about his chances of regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge amid Chelsea’s pursuit of Chilwell.

Juventus are also interested in his signature.

Telles has impressed in Portugal’s top flight this season.

He has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 23 Liga NOS starts.

Tagliafico, who has also been linked with Leicester as a replacement for Chilwell, has scored five goals in all competitions.

Chelsea have enjoyed a good start to the summer transfer window, already securing deals for Werner and Ziyech.

And, now, it’s Operation Havertz.

Lampard feels the Bayer Leverkusen star has the potential to succeed at Stamford Bridge having watched him take the Bundesliga by storm this season, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists from 30 matches.

Chelsea have the money to buy Havertz with the Werner and Ziyech arrivals funded by the blockbuster departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer.

And, if they do succeed in their mission to land the 21-year-old, then Barkley and Loftus-Cheek may be shown the door.

When Chelsea signed Barkley in the January transfer window of 2018, they thought they were onto a winner.

Walking footballer Vernon explains how the Chelsea Foundation has offered him support and comfort during the coronavirus pandemic

When the coronavirus pandemic brought about the suspension of walking football sessions run by the Chelsea Foundation, it did not stop Chelsea’s charitable arm from continuing to support the participants of the programme.

Some 50 adults maintain their physical health on a weekly basis through walking football at the club’s Cobham training ground, while sustaining their mental health through the chance to meet and socialise.

Vernon Ray had been one of those regulars but the support of the Foundation became even more invaluable for him during the heights of the pandemic.

”I managed to contract the virus just before the lockdown,” says Vernon, adding he got it after a walking football trip to Portugal.

”Giving your time is the greatest commodity one can offer. Chelsea have done this in abundance.”

Vernon Ray, Chelsea Foundation walking football participant

”It affected around 20 out of the 30 that went along, with five of us getting it pretty badly.

”As a family we had to go into 14 days of isolation and I had to spend most of that in bed.”

But the ties that the Foundation had built with Vernon through walking football over the past four years meant they remained in touch.

”Our coach Mark Blythe was great during this period,” says Vernon, a season-ticket holder at Stamford Bridge for over 30 years. ”He kept in regular contact, making sure we had all we needed and always offering to help.”

Instead of the walking football sessions denied by the lockdown, the Foundation has stayed connected with its participants through regular Zoom meetings.

The calls involve anything from golf lessons to quizzes, while the Foundation has arranged for legendary Chelsea players such as Gary Chivers and Pat Nevin to drop in and give the participants cheer.

”It has been such a lift,” adds Vernon. ”My highlight was chatting with Pat, a big favourite of mine.

”Gary was also superb, not only engaging but at times he felt like an old friend and nothing seemed too much bother for him.”

The Zoom sessions have meant that the group are still regularly in touch and were less at risk of isolation during the lockdown.

”It really did give me and many others something to look forward to,” Vernon says.

”Giving your time is the greatest commodity one can offer. Chelsea have done this in abundance with ex-players, coaches, staff, etc. and to me that speaks volumes.

”The caring and thoughtfulness of all involved has meant the world to me.”

That thoughtfulness of the Foundation towards him has been replicated by Vernon to others. During recent weeks he has helped raise over £3,500 for Kingston Hospital by running a weekly music night, streamed live online.

”The feedback I got was it was a lifeline to many and something many people looked forward to in the darkest of times,” Vernon says.

As Kepa Arrizabalaga currently struggles to catch a ball, Frank Lampard finds himself caught in a bind.

It’s by now well known the Chelsea manager would sell the Basque goalkeeper given the chance, but that is currently highly unlikely. Chelsea paid a world-record fee for a goalkeeper as recently as 2019, and it is the club’s general policy to recoup such value in any sale. While some Spanish sides including Real Betis are interested, one involved source says it’s currently “impossible” he moves permanently. “Nobody will pay the amount that Chelsea did.”

It’s all the more difficult in such an uncertain, Covid-conditioned market. That means Lampard will have to persist with the 25-year-old, which means the key question is how long Kepa’s problems will persist.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

He just hasn’t inspired confidence of late with his feet, his hands, or – really – his whole body. West Ham United’s first on Wednesday displayed the last of those flaws, as Kepa initially went for Jarrod Bowen’s corner, hesitated and got caught under bodies and then just watched Tomas Soucek’s header fly in. This wasn’t exactly vintage Peter Schmeichel.

It should be recognised that there was some internal debate at Chelsea about signing Kepa back in 2018. The initial target was Alisson Becker, who decided on Liverpool. Some of Kepa’s stats compared unfavourably to the Brazilian – not to mention a series of other goalkeepers, like Thibaut Courtois – and that has continued into this campaign.

His save percentage has recently been the lowest in the Premier League. Such stats are still dependent on certain interpretations and qualifiers, and Kepa’s many qualities shouldn’t be overlooked.

For all that he feels one of those lampooned goalkeepers right now, there are many experts who believe he has serious ability. Dave Henderson, a goalkeeping scout and former professional, is one.

“He has fantastic reflexes, is brave, and has excellent agility,” Henderson says. “He’s as good as any goalkeeper in the world in those departments. He’s way behind Ederson in distribution, though, and way behind Courtois in box domination, to be the complete goalkeeper.”

The latter is what feels the most problematic for Chelsea right now, given how fragile the defensive part of the team is. Kepa isn’t currently offering that necessary composure that offers reassurance.

It is something that has actually become all the more conspicuous in the current circumstances, with empty stadiums. Kepa is usually one of the loudest on the pitch, and the most persistent. His shouts of “close the gap!” or “lines!” soundtrack the games. They are always barked.

Some Chelsea players actually referenced this last year, and felt the fact Kepa was always shouting and screaming actually betrayed a certain immaturity. The feeling was he was never sure his defenders would do the right thing.

That can be the subtle and significant change when you go from a mid-table club, like Athletic Bilbao, to one with the pressures of Chelsea. It can bring that out.

Kepa can admittedly seem bolshy, as was the case with the controversial incident with Maurizio Sarri in last season’s League Cup final. He was very sure of himself when speaking to The Independent in the immediate aftermath of that incident, backing his own stance, before issuing an apology the next day.

That controversy still hangs over his situation. It would be fascinating to know what Lampard really thinks of it.

It’s impossible not to think it feeds into the current uncertainty over his future. There is similarly a lingering uncertainty to Kepa’s game. His confidence does seem affected, which may be why he isn’t making some saves he should.

Others who know the player say there are other factors. They say he’s “not himself”, and point to how he hasn’t fully settled in England, after the break-up of a long-term girlfriend from his teenage years.

It could be one of those situations where he just needs a change of scene, in the same way as compatriots Fernando Torres and Alvaro Morata did. A potential option for Chelsea would be a loan, in a way that allows Kepa to boost his value again.

It’s just that the market is uncertain there, too, and his replacement would be Willy Caballaro. Kepa is still better than the Argentine even in this form, and there aren’t too many options right now although Ajax’s highly-rated Andre Onana is a favourite of Lampard’s.

It’s why Lampard may be in this bind for some time. Kepa needs to get back to his true form soon.

David Moyes attempted to take Barkley to the Olympic Stadium in January but Chelsea rejected the loan proposal.

Barkley broke into the Everton team while Moyes was in charge and now the Scot wants to be reunited with his former midfielder.

The Mirror claim West Ham are to offer Barkley regular football which may help him break into the England squad ahead of Euro 2021.

The 26-year-old had fallen behind Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Willian and Jorginho in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

However, Lampard has trusted Barkley with a starting birth in each of their last three matches and he scored the winner against Leicester in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Rice has been one of the few stand-out performers for David Moyes’ struggling Hammers this season.

The 21-year-old has been deployed as a holding midfielder since breaking into the first team at the Olympic Stadium.

However, the England international has not always shielded the defence as he is actually more accustomed to playing in the centre-back position.

Rice came through the ranks at his boyhood club Chelsea but was released when he was 14 years old.

Now Frank Lampard is plotting a swoop to bring the former Republic of Ireland youngster back to Stamford Bridge to solve his defensive issues.

Last night’s 3-2 loss to West Ham only further highlighted the Blues’ fragility at the back.

Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner are set to provide Chelsea with extra firepower next year but the leaky defence also needs sorting out.

Blues fans grew frustrated with Marcos Alonso, Antonio Rudgier and Andreas Christensen at the Olympic Stadium.

But the Athletic claim none of those three stars are yet bound to leave Stamford Bridge.

It is suggested centre-back Kurt Zouma could be one of the first out of the exit door.

Chelsea have got their transfer window off to a flying start, with deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner already in the bag.

A deal for Ziyech was announced back in February, with the Ajax star leaving the Eredivisie behind for a new challenge in the Premier League.

And, just last month, Chelsea announced that they’d beaten the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool to the signing of Werner.

Now, Le10 Sport say the Blues have ‘made contact’ with the representatives of Lazio midfielder Milinkovic-Savic ahead of the summer transfer window.

And it’s claimed that Makelele is working on Lampard’s behalf, supposedly acting as an advisor for his former club.

Chelsea have opened talks with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s representatives over the Lazio star moving to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports.

The Serbia international has long been linked with a switch to the Premier League, with Manchester United and Tottenham also credited with an interest.

Lazio have so far refused to budge on their £80million asking price, but Le 10 Sport claim Chelsea are speaking to the player’s team about a move.

Claude Makelele is involved in the discussions, advising Chelsea, but the Blues will face competition from Paris Saint-Germain.

The French champions have made an offer of £54m for Milinkovic-Savic, although PSG are unwilling to increase their bid.

Chelsea have spent big this summer having already signed Ajax forward Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner for a combined 87m.

Frank Lampard is keen to continue the spending spree and is reportedly targeting Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

Milinkovic-Savic is 25 years old and plays in the middle of the park, chipping in with six goals and five assists this season.

The Serbian has been a leading figure in a remarkable season for Lazio, where they have launched a title challenge to long-standing champions Juventus.

Lazio are currently second in Serie A, four points behind Juventus with nine games left to play.

Juventus’ 3-1 win over Genoa kept Lazio at bay, with goals from Paulo Dybala, Cristiano Ronaldo and Douglas Costa keeping the reigning champions on course for their ninth straight title.

Spiken! – 1. Arsenal – Norwich

Norwich fast föränkrat i botten

Paul Merson says he would be shocked if Chelsea weren’t crowned Premier League champions in the next four years after their seismic title-deciding victory over Manchester City.

Chelsea confirmed Liverpool’s ascension to the pinnacle of English football for the first time in 30 years with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the former champions at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

The victory – Chelsea’s fourth in a row in all competitions and second since the restart – left the Blues on course for a top-four finish.

Merson believes securing Champions League football coupled with Roman Abramovich’s recent financial backing in the transfer market will lay the foundation for greater prizes in the coming years.

”To go and beat Man City was massive,” he told Sky Sports. ”It was massive because everyone is looking to close the gap.

Live on

”Chelsea have got nice fixtures between now and the end of the season, so I don’t think there’s any way they’re not finishing in the top four.”

Merson added: ”I think Chelsea need a left-back, and they might need another centre-half, and then they’ll be a major force next season. I don’t think they’ll win the Premier League next season, but the gap won’t be as big.

”They mean business. The owner has been brilliant; he’s weighed it up and gone – bang! Here’s your money.

”He’s looked at the situation and thought, ’Tottenham are struggling, Pep Guardiola won’t be at City forever,’ and he’s trying to get into the top four, close the gap and challenge when they have their chance.

”With Liverpool putting up records like they have with their players being as good as they are, it’s only a matter of time before the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid come calling.

”In three or four years, I’d be quite shocked if Chelsea don’t win the Premier League.”

Lampard proving big-game credentials

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard says he could have made more than the three substitutions he made at half-time of their 1-0 win against Leicester in the FA Cup

Chelsea’s hopes of challenging for the title in Frank Lampard’s maiden season in charge were hampered before a ball had been kicked.

The club’s summer transfer ban forced the Blues legend’s hand as cries for academy players to be given a chance were finally listened to.

On the pitch, Lampard’s desire to entertain the Stamford Bridge faithful – just as he did in his playing days – resulted in a number of debilitating results against so-called lesser opposition, but Merson believes valuable lessons have been learned.

”Those odd results against lesser teams were a show of inexperience from Frank at the time,” the Sky Sports pundit said.

”Coming into a big club like Chelsea, he wanted to entertain in those games he lost. He was thinking, ’I better entertain the man behind the goal’.

”When you’re an experienced manager you know you can’t do that against teams who defend deep all the time. But now, he’s getting better, he’s making big decisions now during games.”

Chelsea – title contenders next season?

Gerard Brand on the Sky Sports Football Weekend Review podcast:

’We’d all like to think Chelsea can challenge next season, it would be great to have a three or four-horse race, and it would be a great story with Lampard after the transfer ban. I believe they’re a couple years off, though.

’Let’s not forget some of the results they’ve had this season; they’ve lost against West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton at home without scoring a single goal, and they’ve also lost to Newcastle away and drawn at Bournemouth and Brighton. They were extremely inconsistent from November to February.

’There’s little doubt it’s exciting and positive at Chelsea at the moment, but I’d like to see a bit more from them against low blocking teams. That, really, is the key to a title challenge.

’The better Chelsea get on the personnel front, the more high-profile signings they make, the more the majority of the Premier League will put up that sort of defence.’

If there are any doubts over the Germany international they can be ironed out with a solid performance in the cup final this weekend.

There are not many more difficult opponents to face than Bayern, as Chelsea know all-to well given they trail Hans Flick’s side 3-0 in the Champions League last-16 first leg, which will be continued in August.

In what could be Havertz’s final appearance for Leverkusen, a strong showing against the league champions will only enhance his reputation and could tempt Chelsea in making a move before their rivals.

A host of top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester United, have placed Havertz on their radar.
