Philippe Coutinho has reportedly been offered a transfer lifeline by Chelsea, with Blues boss Frank Lampard keen to sign the Brazilian on loan.

Barcelona are desperate to offload Coutinho this summer after he has failed to impress in a temporary spell at Bayern Munich.

There were signs Barca could find it difficult to move the 27-year-old on due to demands over his transfer fee, as the La Liga giants want at least £70million in return.

But Chelsea could offer an alternative solution to both Barca and Coutinho, by taking him on a season-long loan which could eventually be made permanent.

Spanish publication Sport report that Chelsea are already in talks over a potential deal involving Coutinho.

The London club wanted to sign the playmaker last summer, but were still under a UEFA-imposed transfer ban.

Barca are pushing for the loan deal to include an obligation for Chelsea to buy at the end of next season.

Coutinho’s inconsistent performances at Bayern have not convinced Lampard to commit to a permanent deal, but he is hopeful of helping the player return to form.

The Blues have set aside around £30million to fund the loan move though, which would include making Coutinho one of the highest earners at the club.

Chelsea would rather the deal included an option to buy, as opposed to an obligation; even if that means paying a larger fee should they decide to sign him in 2021.

A switch to Stamford Bridge could suit Coutinho too, who prefers to return to England if there is no future for him at Barcelona.

Key to the discussions is Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian, who holds strong links at Chelsea.

But despite Leicester withdrawing from the race, Chelsea are not the only club willing to take him on loan.

Man Utd and Everton have both expressed an interest, but Coutinho would rather not sign for a direct rival of former club Liverpool.

Tottenham also remain interested after negotiations broke down last summer, while French club PSG are open to involving Coutinho in a possible swap deal for Neymar.

Frank Lampard is reportedly confident he can get Philippe Coutinho back to performing at his best as Chelsea continue to hold talks with Barcelona over a transfer.

Chelsea are hopeful of bringing Coutinho to the club on loan, while Barcelona are eager to offload the former Liverpool star who has failed to live up to his monster price tag.

Coutinho is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, but the German club have decided not to take up the option to sign the playmaker permanently.

Spanish outlet Sport claim Barcelona are keen to include an obligation to buy into Coutinho’s loan deal, but Chelsea are resisting that demand.

Barcelona want Chelsea to commit to buying Coutinho, but the Blues only want the option to secure the permanent transfer when the loan deal ends.

Lampard has sanctioned the move for Coutinho and despite his struggle for consistency, thinks he can recapture the form he produced at Liverpool.

Coutinho is thought to be keen on a move back to the Premier League, with Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham also showing an interest in the 27-year-old.

While it seems several Premier League sides are eager to sign Coutinho, Liverpool have already ruled themselves out of the race.

Jurgen Klopp has recently opened up about the decision to sell Coutinho to Barcelona after a drawn out transfer saga.

‘I really respected Phil’s switch from the first second,’ Klopp told Pure Football Podcast.

‘Not that I do that all the time but it felt, oh wow that could be difficult.

‘So it’s not about yes we signed a new contract so many weeks before that but it was really clear he would not have asked me for any other club but for this club, there was no chance.

‘Then we had to be hard in the summer because we had no other solution. We lost Adam Lallana [to injury] in that time as well, we would have lost two players.

‘That’s not possible, you cannot solve that on the transfer market.

‘He was open to that [staying] and that was really cool.

‘Then you have to be fair in the window and say we can do it, we don’t like it but we can do it.’

Chelsea could have a very different line-up next season after four possible transfers.

That includes the mega-signing of Philippe Coutinho, though the Barcelona man could join on loan rather than a permanent transfer.

The Blues have worked under a transfer ban this campaign, though they managed to get it lifted in time for the January window.

However, the club did not act on this, instead signing Hakim Ziyech in February – who will join at the end of the season.

Circumstances have altered in recent times, with the coronavirus decimating the footballing calendar.

Nevertheless, Chelsea are looking at potential signings in the transfer window – whenever that may be.

Among them include the signing of Coutinho as the club eye some razzle-dazzle, which has been missing since the departure of Eden Hazard.

The Barcelona star has struggled at the Nou Camp but has shown why he is such a good player at Bayern Munich this campaign.

But the Bavarian outfit will not be making the deal permanent after being quoted a nine-figure sum and another loan could be on the way.

According to reports in Spain, that would cost the Blues a £13m loan fee – plus wages.

As well as the playmaker, Frank Lampard wants to bring in a left-back, a centre-back and a striker.

It could see the club splash out on a total of £180m-worth of new stars at Stamford Bridge.

Porto ace Alex Telles has been targeted by the Blues as a cheaper option to Leicester’s Ben Chilwell at a price of £35m.

A left-footed defender has emerged as a priority with several targets in mind, including former player Nathan Ake.

But Lille star Gabriel Magalhaes could be the man to arrive in west London for a fee of £32m, beating the likes of Everton and Arsenal.

And an elite striker is one of the priorities, with Inter Milan hotshot Lautaro Martinez priced at £100m – though they will have to fend off Barcelona.

It could lead to Lampard having a strong squad coupled with world-class players and academy wonderkids as he looks to bring the top prizes back to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea potential line-up: Arrizabalaga; James, Rudiger, Gabriel, Telles; Jorginho, Kante, Coutinho; Ziyech, Pulisic, Martinez.

Barcelona would prefer to sell the Brazilian this summer but their £80million valuation is unlikely to be met.

Therefore, they would reluctantly accept a loan deal similar to what Bayern Munich have in place this season.

However, Coutinho has failed to light up the Allianz Arena and the German outfit are not wanting to make the transfer permanent.

That means the 27-year-old could be offloaded to the Premier League, where Spanish publication Sport claim Chelsea are leading the race.

The Blues would have to cover Coutinho’s £11.5m annual salary to take the playmaker on loan for 12 months.

Chelsea star Mason Mount and Ajax's Hakim Ziyech

Mason Mount says he knows all about new Chelsea signing Hakim Ziyech from his time playing on loan in the Eredivisie and cannot wait to start training with the Ajax star.

Ziyech agreed his move to Stamford Bridge in February, though the suspension of football globally caused by the coronavirus pandemic has created some confusion over when he will join the club.

The transfer is due to go through on July 1, but both the Eredivisie and Premier League could still be trying to complete their seasons then, with Ziyech ineligible to play for his new club until the 2020/21 campaign begins.

But Mount is eager to play alongside Ziyech – who he faced off against while on loan at Vitesse in the 2017/18 season – and believes Chelsea have landed a top-drawer player.

During a Combat Corona FIFA tournament for charity, Mount was asked if he was looking to playing with Ziyech, replying: ‘Yeah. So two years ago I was in Holland on loan so I knew a bit about him then and obviously how good of a player he is.

‘So obviously it’s another amazing, world-class player joining the club. So yeah buzzing to work with him, train with him and hopefully play with him.’

The Chelsea star was taking on Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney in the FIFA event, though was soundly beaten in both games and will be hoping for a much better performance when he takes on best friend and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice on Monday evening.

Mount was heavily criticised last month for having a kickabout with Rice when he was meant to be self-isolating, with teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi having tested positive for coronavirus.

But he is abiding by lockdown rules now and keeping fit thanks to tailored training and nutrition plans from the club, with Chelsea sending each of their players watt bikes to stay in shape.

Teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek also took part in the tournament, saying of the lockdown: ‘It’s been difficult just staying inside, it’s just a complete change of routine.

‘But I think it’s just the best thing to do, just avoid going out as much as you can, because I think everyone just wants to get this over and done with, back to normal routine, normal football on the weekends.’

Jadon Sancho may have inadvertently boosted Chelsea’s chances of signing Philippe Coutinho, by snubbing the Blues in favour of a move to Manchester United.

The Borussia Dortmund winger’s move to Old Trafford may well hinge on whether they qualify for the Champions League, but either it seems he has no desire to play under Frank Lampard at Chelsea.

Lampard has therefore turned his attention away from the former Manchester City ace and is now focused on signing Barcelona’s £142m playmaker Coutinho, according to Sport.

The ex-Liverpool star is unlikely to complete a permanent move to current loan side Bayern Munich, and seems destined to not be given another chance at the Nou Camp.

Jadon Sancho has no plans to ply his trade for Chelsea should he return to the Premier League this summer

The Blues have already made their first signing of the summer have announced they will land Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech on July 1.

And with Sancho now seemingly set to join Manchester United in a £100m deal, Lampard could opt to bring in Coutinho to add experience to his young and talented Blues squad.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will have to stump up £70m for the Brazil international, according to the Evening Standard.

Philippe Coutinho’s mega money move to Barcelona has not worked out for him

Just 18 months after Barca spent double that figure on Coutinho, he was shipped out to Bayern on loan after scoring 21 goals in 76 appearances.

The 27-year-old has even been linked with a move to Leicester where he would be reunited with former boss Brenan Rodgers, who he worked with at Liverpool.

When Coutinho signed for Barcelona, Rodgers revealed the pair still keep in touch.

He said: “He sent me a nice text the other day when he was arriving in Barcelona.

“He is a great young guy, he was never a moment’s problem for me. He was a magical player to work with.

“At the time when I bought him, he wasn’t in the team at Inter Milan. People questioned whether he was big enough and tall enough.

“I’d seen him as a young player at 18 at Inter Milan around top players and I always felt he had the technical quality. And, of course, he was always going to get better physically.

“We kept in contact ever since we left.”

Antoine Griezmann has set his sights on Philippe Coutinho’s shirt number at Barcelona amid growing speculation linking the Brazilian with of a move away from the Camp Nou.

Griezmann has worn the No17 shirt at Barcelona since his move across Spain last summer but now wants the No7 currently occupied by Coutinho, hinting it will become vacant at the end of the season.

”I would like to get the number seven shirt again,” Griezmann said during a live Twitch stream.

Barcelona are open to offers for Coutinho this summer and will consider bids in the region of €80m.

That represents a significant markdown on the €120m plus €40m in variables they paid Liverpool for his services in January 2018. The Brazilian has spent this season on loan at Bayern Munich, but the Bundesliga champions do not plan to take up an option to make that deal permanent for €120m at the end of the year.

That has prompted Barca to seek other suitors at a knock-down price, and Chelsea have been linked with a move should their attempt to lure Jadon Sancho fail.

Reports in Spain claim Frank Lampard is tempted by the Brazilian given his proven quality at Premier League level.

”He can lead him and show him the right ways.

”You can see that starting to come to fruition with his football this season. I’m a big fan.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley believes owner Roman Abramovich’s change in approach in the transfer market is good news for some of the Blues squad.

Burley told ESPN: ”One thing I would say is that the landscape at Chelsea has slightly changed because the appetite for Abramovich, the owner, to spend the money that he was once spending a few years ago, when he would go out and say ’Right, we were 10 points behind the league leaders at the end of the season, go out and get me six players, and I don’t care what it costs’, that landscape certainly in the last couple of years at Chelsea has changed.

Chelsea have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of Achraf Hakimi after the latest comments made his agent.

The Morocco international has spent the last two seasons on loan from Real Madrid at Borussia Dortmund.

The full-back has made 64 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit in that time.

As well as becoming a key part of the starting XI, his versatility has not gone unnoticed.

Hakimi’s preferred position is at right-back, but he can be deployed at left-back too, comfortable in a back-four or as a wing-back.

The 21-year-old is set to return to the Bernabeu this summer but reports that a new contract was agreed have been rubbished by his agent.

Chelsea are looking at Achraf Hakimi as a potential transfer

Alejandro Camano, who represents Hakimi, moved to deny claims in Spain that he had extended his Real deal.

Camano said: ”There is no basis at all. His contract at Real Madrid is still the same one we negotiated in 2017 and it runs until 2022.”

”We have to wait. After this misery (the coronavirus outbreak) we will sit together with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.”

It gives Frank Lampard a slight chance of pulling off a transfer for the highly-rated defender.

A left-back is a top priority but the former Derby coach is keen on bringing in players who can be deployed in multiple positions.

That has already been seen with Hakimi’s compatriot Hakim Ziyech, who was signed from Ajax in February.

The 27-year-old can play on the wings or in midfield while the Dortmund loanee can operate across both sides in defence.

Reece James is the long-term solution at right-back but the likes of Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso could leave in the transfer market.

With Cesar Azpilicueta also approaching 31, a look to the future is needed at Stamford Bridge.

Hakimi would also allow Lampard tactical flexibility, with the Chelsea legend frequently toying with different formations.

He has moved from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 at times during the season with varying degrees of success.

As well as a left-back, the Blues are looking to land a forward, a winger and a centre-back.

The footballing landscape will be changed by the coronavirus pandemic, with clubs no longer willing to spend such vast sums on transfer fees and players’ wages, reckons Paul Merson.

Uncertainty still reigns over the Premier League, with the season currently on hiatus while the country deals with the health crisis.

The Premier League still hopes to complete the 2019/20 season, but no one can say for sure if that will happen, when it will happen or how it will happen.

Clubs are still paying enormous wages to their players but with no incomes coming in from gate receipts and other revenue streams all but wiped out as the country stays in lockdown for the foreseeable future.

Former Arsenal star Merson believes that this difficult situation for clubs will see them reconsider their expenditure in the future, given that this could happen again.

‘Football needs to get real because the days of £100m transfers and £350,000-a-week wages are over,’ Merson wrote for the Daily Star.

‘Clubs can’t take the chance of paying out huge sums of money like that anymore in case anything like coronavirus ever happens again.

‘It’s not his fault he’s sitting at home with nothing to do but Arsenal are currently paying Mesut Ozil £350,000-a-week to do nothing.

‘The people who own football clubs, they’re bright, intelligent people. They are weighing this up now. Who wants to be paying out that kind of money?

‘And Borussia Dortmund can forget about Chelsea or Manchester United paying £100m for Jadon Sancho.

‘Those days are gone.’

Sancho has been widely linked with a return to England in the summer, with Manchester United and Chelsea leading the race for his signature.

Dortmund will have been expecting at least £100m for the 20-year-old, with reports suggesting they were actually looking for closer to £120m for the England international.

The Bundesliga outfit will undoubtedly still ask for these enormous figures for one of their prize assets, but whether United and Chelsea are still ready to pay them is yet to be seen.

It is not even known if there will be a transfer window as we know it this year, with transfers the last thing on the mind of most players and agents.

Sky Sports quoted an anonymous agent as saying: ‘No one is thinking about the window right now. Who knows what state everyone is going to be in then? Will clubs have money to spend? Will players want to move home?’

Jadon Sancho has credited Chelsea pair Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba has key inspirations during his most formative years as a young footballer.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise since swapping Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after talents in Europe and the focus of a £120million summer transfer battle between Chelsea and Manchester United .

Having started his journey in south London, with a Southwark Under-11s team, it was Lampard and Drogba a little further west who most impressed a younger Sancho busy trying out tricks seen on YouTube.

”It was all about learning skills and expressing myself,” he told The Independent late last year.

”I like adapting that to a real game. It makes defending harder because opponents don’t think you have those sort of skills.

”It gives you an advantage against some players and luckily enough it’s been working out for me.”

He added: ”Ronaldinho was the main guy I used to watch on YouTube. But I liked Frank Lampard quite a lot and Didier Drogba when they were playing for Chelsea.

”They were the three players I looked up to.”

Arsenal want around £18m for the Armenian winger, who has been on loan at Roma this season, with the Italian club keen to make the move permanent.

Former Manchester United star Mkhitaryan has told friends that he is prepared to take a pay cut to make the move happen and told Arsenal he would like to go, but the two clubs have been unable to agree a fee, though an extension of the loan agreement could be possible.

Roma are now though at the point of looking for a cheaper option, and have made an inquiry for Chelsea forward, Pedro, who is out of contract at the end of this season and has made it clear that he is not staying at Stamford Bridge.

Pedro, 32, is though on the shopping list of several clubs around the world, with Lazio also keen, as well as several MLS sides in the USA.

Former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair believes Reece James has more to his game than Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, insisting he is a better defender.

James has broken into the Chelsea first team this season under Frank Lampard, making 21 appearances domestically and also playing five times in the Champions League.

Comparisons between the playing styles of the Chelsea defender and Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold are difficult to escape, with the pair likely to battle – alongside the likes of Kieran Trippier and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – for a place in the England team for years to come.

Alexander-Arnold has made nine appearances for England to date, while James is yet to make his senior debut.

Sinclair – who made 169 appearances for Chelsea between 1990-98 – acknowledges it will be a difficult task for James to stay ahead of Alexander-Arnold, but believes he’s got more to his overall game, particularly defensively.

The 48-year-old also said he has been aware of the promising defender for some time and is most impressed by his versatility.

Speaking to GentingBet, Sinclair said: “I’ve been aware of Reece James for a number of years after speaking with [Chelsea assistant manager] Jody [Morris] about the talent coming through the system at Chelsea.

“The one thing about James is that he can play all across the back four but he can play in the midfield as well.”

Where James has assisted just two goals in the Premier League this season, Alexander-Arnold has assisted 12, a feat Sinclair notes makes him challenging to rival.

“It’s going to be a big ask for James to rival Trent Alexander-Arnold given the way that he is performing for Liverpool,” Sinclair said. “But I do see faults in Trent’s game.

“Defensively, Reece James is a better defender than Alexander-Arnold at the moment. But it is hard to find a full-back that produces as many assists in Europe than Trent does for Liverpool.”

Sinclair conceded that, as things stand, James will likely be behind Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order. However, the former Blue does believe it will be a closely-contested battle.

“Alexander-Arnold will likely command the right-back position for England for the next five or six years,” Sinclair conceded. ”But Reece James will certainly push him, especially once he has gained more experience in the Premier League.

“As an all-round full-back, I think there is more to his game than Trent; he is good going forward but he is also very strong defensively.”

Willian on Liverpool

Chelsea star Willian thinks Liverpool are so far ahead of the top of the Premier League table because they have not continuously chopped and changed their manager.

”I think the secret is continuity,” Willian told ESPN Brazil.

”The coach (Jurgen Klopp) has been with the club for almost five years. When you have continuity, you can win titles.

”They had a sequence of important victories, which show the maturity of the team.

”You have to have time to get things done, and Liverpool have had a coach and a philosophy for a long time. The team is the same, the cast, it is one or the other only that changes, the base is the same.

”In Manchester City too, [Pep] Guardiola has been there for a long time, the philosophy is always the same.

”Chelsea are already changing a lot. In seven years, I have had five different coaches and philosophies.

”But even so, we won titles, because Chelsea always had that, it has always been like that and continues to win titles. I think each club has a profile.”

Chelsea were in ‘advanced’ talks to sign Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker but stalled on a deal because the Blues believed they could convince Thibaut Courtois to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Alisson, 27, joined Liverpool from Roma in 2018 for £67million after the Reds moved quickly to solve their problem between the sticks.

Chelsea were looking for a replacement for Courtois as the Belgian had made clear that he wanted to join Real Madrid.

The Blues held talks with Alisson and the Brazilian was keen on a move to Stamford Bridge but the Blues gave Liverpool a window of opportunity as they dropped negotiations to focus on convincing Courtois to stay, according to the Athletic.

The negotiations were said to be at an advanced stage but as Chelsea cooled their interest, it allowed Liverpool to swoop in.

Alisson has been a revelation for the Reds and helped Liverpool cure their defensive problems that undermined Jurgen Klopp’s early work at Anfield.

Chelsea ultimately failed to convince Courtois to stay and instead triggered a £73m release clause in Kepa Arrizabalaga’s contract to sign the Spaniard from Athletic Bilbao.

The 25-year-old was dropped midway through this season in favour of veteran Willy Caballero and Frank Lampard is keen on signing an experienced goalkeeper this summer.

However, Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is set to turn down a move to Stamford Bridge as he wants to stay at the Allianz Arena.

Chelsea have been told they are Samuel Umtiti’s preferred destination if he is sold by Barcelona this summer.

But the Blues are currently pressing ahead with a move for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes instead.

Barca misfit Umtiti has already been offered to Arsenal and Manchester United – and Chelsea have now enquired about him too.

Blues boss Frank Lampard wants a new centre back with Fikayo Tomori likely to be sent out on loan and doubts about the future of Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen.

But France World Cup winner Umtiti is rated at £45m, which has put off potential bidders.

Chelsea like the 26-year-old, who has 31 caps for his country, and asked for information about his situation.

And Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for Umtiti as they try to drum up funds for a spending spree.

He is not keen to leave the Nou Camp and wants talks with the club before deciding his future.

But intermediaries have already let Chelsea know that they are his preferred option if he is forced to leave.

For now, the Blues have added him to a shortlist of potential targets as they weigh up their options.

Gabriel Magalhaes has attracted plenty of attention.

But their top choice is Brazilian defender Magalhaes, who impressed twice against them in this season’s Champions League.

The 22-year-old is considered better business by Chelsea because of his age and asking price of around £30m.

But they face competition for his signature from at least three other clubs, with Everton also pushing hard to sign him.

Chelsea have already made a move for Magalhaes despite the uncertainty swirling around football because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Frank Lampard wants to change up his defence.

Frank Lampard dropped Kepa in favour of veteran Willy Caballero after the Spaniard’s form dropped dramatically midway through the season.

Should Neuer reject a move, Lampard is expected to look elsewhere with Inter Milan star Samir Handanovic another option.

£300k Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal have been told to put a £300,000-a-week new contract on the table for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to keep him out of the clutches of the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Manchester United.

Aubameyang will have just one year left on his existing deal as of July, presenting a major headache to the Arsenal hierarchy.

Previous reports have indicated that Aubameyang may be willing to stay in north London despite the club’s lack of Champions League football in his time at the Emirates, if his pay-packet is significantly increased.

A rise of over 30 per cent to take his terms to around £300,000 a week could tempt him to turn down interest from elsewhere and remain in the English capital, where he is thought to be happy.

”While I do believe that Arsenal need to fund a rebuild, my preference would be to offer Aubameyang what he wants,” Nicholas told Sky Sports. “Is it possible Ozil could move on? Could this then help fund wages for Aubameyang and others?

”There are differing ways of doing this, but more than anything, I would want Arsenal to renew Aubameyang’s contract for three or four years, if they can. They must give Aubameyang exactly what he wants. There simply aren’t many other players like him at that level.”

Wanted: Victor Osimhen

Several European heavyweights are queuing up to sign Lille star Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen, 21, arrived from Belgian outfit Charleroi in July 2019 for a bargain £10million plus a further £2.5m in add-ons.

And he’s already proved an astute acquisition having scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 38 appearances for the Ligue 1 side – including two in the Champions League.

Now, French publication Le Quotidien du Foot claim he’s attracted interest from Premier League quartet Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Roma and Napoli are also said to be interested in Osimhen, who is said to command a fee in the region of £90million – £18m higher than Lille’s previous transfer record sale of £72m that Arsenal paid for Nicolas Pepe.
